MANAGING THE AGING PROCESS LECTURE SERIES
USC-VHH is hosting a free monthly lecture series titled “Managing the Aging Process” for patients, caregivers and anyone in the community who may have questions and concerns about this challenging transition. The lectures, presented in partnership with Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles, will be held the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at USC-VHH.
The next lecture in the series will be held on Tuesday, July 18. “All on the Same Team – Working with Healthcare Professionals” will focus on how patients and their caregivers can best communicate and collaborate with medical staff to meet the needs of an aging patient.

SUMMER FASHION SHOW AND LUNCHEON
A summer fashion show and luncheon will be presented by the Pasadena Women’s Connection on Wednesday, July 19 at 11:30 a.m. at the Women’s City Club in Pasadena. Revelation Tops, a unique and trendy shop in Montrose, will present a show that features the latest California lifestyle tops.
Lona Beardsley, teacher, counselor, and joyful mother of eight, will tell “The Inside Story on Family Relationships” in her inspirational talk.

BOOK LAUNCH FOR SCHROEDER
On Wednesday, July 19 at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts a book launch for local author Bonnie Schroeder. Her second novel, “Write My Name on the Sky,” was inspired in part by her own experiences while living in Los Angeles and married to an artist in the ’60s and ’70s, a particularly vibrant time for the city’s art scene.
 It’s 1968 when Kate Prescott thinks she’s found her soul mate in art student Jack Morrison, a man who understands her vague yearning to do something important with her life. Jack’s own ambitions are razor-sharp: become a famous artist. But social change is afoot in the business world where Kate earns a living and, as she progresses up the corporate ladder, her priorities clash with Jack’s. The consequences force Kate to confront the possibility of a life where she’s no longer Jack Morrison’s wife, and to face the deeper challenge of who she might truly be.
 The Women’s Movement of the ’60s and ’70s plays a role in the story too. Cracks were forming in the glass ceiling as Kate began her career, and the novel is ultimately a story of one woman’s quest for independence and self-esteem, at a time when new possibilities were opening up for women in the business world.
Bonnie Schroeder has been a storyteller since the fifth grade when her teacher suggested she put her vivid imagination to work as a writer. She took the advice to heart and has pursued the craft of fiction ever since. She lives in Glendale.

POETS SKILES AND HITT AT MONTROSE LIBRARY
The Village Poets of Sunland-Tujunga will have its monthly reading series on Saturday, July 22 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Montrose Library. The library will present Dorothy Skiles and Marlene Hitt as the guest poets for this event. Poets: Bring your poems and sign up for the open reading.

FIBROMYALGIA/ARTHRITIS SUPPORT GROUP
A community support group for persons with fibromyalgia and/or arthritis meets monthly at La Cañada Presbyterian Church for personal and social support, and education in lifestyle management of these difficult medical issues.
The support group is led by Dianne Whiting, MA, PT and Katie Phillips-Rector, MS, MFT intern.

‘HAPPY HOUR’ FOR LCFToR

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS
Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is conducting music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This ongoing series is for musicians and non-musicians alike and explores the histories of composers and their music. This new series of classes will cover the topic “A New Appreciation of Music – Surprises from the Internet (beginning in 1850 with Brahms and his contemporaries).”
The classes will be held each Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. through Aug. 1 at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose. The cost for the 10-week series of classes is $90.

GOLF TOURNAMENT SUPPORTS CV SHERIFF SUPPORT GROUP
The Crescenta Valley Sheriff Support Group presents the 2017 Crescenta Valley Sheriff Support Group Golf Classic on Aug. 21. This year’s event will be played at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. The cost to participate is $225, which includes green fees, cart, lunch, dinner, awards, tee prizes and more. Tee and green sponsorships are available for $150.
The Sheriff Support Group is a non-profit organization that is run by volunteer members of the community and the money raised is used to support the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station and its deputies. The funds raised help purchase specialized equipment and other programs necessary to operations at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station.

MASTERS ON MUSIQUES ROSTER
The kickoff of Salon de Musiques new season is Oct. 15 and features the music of L. Beethoven: “String Quartet n.4 in C Major Op 18,” L. Spohr: “Duo for Violin & Viola in E minor Op 13” and F. Schubert: “String Quartet n.14 in D minor D 810,” “Death & the Maiden.” The concert will be performed by Serena McKinney and Ambroise Aubrun, violins, Ben Ullery, viola, Yoshika Masuda, cello.

LOCAL YOGA CLASS
Gentle/level one yoga classes continue on Friday mornings at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s of Mountains Church.  
This class will improve joint mobility, flexibility, muscle strength and balance and will include some restorative yoga poses to help the body heal its own aches and pains by engaging the parasympathetic system. Sessions will be 75 minutes. Instructor is experienced in many forms of yoga. Please bring mat.

A stroke support group hosted by Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center meets the second Tuesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Rehabilitation Conference Room on the third floor of the hospital.  
The support group is open to caregivers, family members, friends and stroke survivors and will help with communication, education, and coping styles while building friendships, solving problems and sharing resources and experience.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
 All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
