GRAVITAS AT BRAND LIBRARY
Beltran-Arechiga, Nicholette Kominos, Melissa Manfull, Kristan Marvell and Sonja Schenk challenge an evolution of perception in the new exhibition “Gravitas” at the Brand Library & Art Center.
Working in various mediums, the artists are able to create work that upon first viewing appears to have the physicality of weight, of gravity. Concrete blocks, monolithic forms, sturdy structures, complex constructions and yet, upon further reflection, the viewer is led to question the tangibility of the fabrications in front of them. Encouraged to move beyond aesthetic beauty, the question of intent arises and a search for meaning and interpretation begins. In short, viewers are challenged to evolve their perception.
“Gravitas” will be on view through Aug. 5.
Brand Library & Art Center is located at 1601 W. Mountain St. in Glendale.
‘FROM COWS TO CONCRETE’ AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
On Sunday, Aug. 7 at 4 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse welcomes sustainable and urban farming experts Rachel Surls and Judith Gerber for a discussion and signing of their book “From Cows to Concrete: The Rise and Fall of Farming in Los Angeles.”
Los Angeles was the original wine country of California, leading the state’s wine production for more than a century. Until the 1950s, Los Angeles County was the agricultural center of North America. And where today’s freeways soar, cows calmly chewed their cud. From the earliest pueblo cornfields to the struggles of farm workers to the rise of the environmental movement, the new book “From Cows To Concrete” chronicles the tale of how agriculture forged Los Angeles into an urban metropolis and how, ultimately, this farm empire spurred the very growth that paved it over, as sprawling suburbs swallowed up thousands of acres of prime farmland. Authors Surls and Gerber tell the continuing story of how, on the same land once squandered by corporate greed and “progress,” urban farmers are making inroads to a greener future. More than 150 vintage images expand the fascinating, detailed history.

Martin is a self-made man with little formal education. His book is a deeply personal reflection on a life marked by violence, controversy, physical pain, emotional suffering and ultimately peace found through family and religious awakening. Within the pages of “Shrapnel of the Soul and Redemption,” he describes his childhood as the son of a bootlegger, life on the road as a professional athlete, the many women who crossed his path, the stars he befriended, his ties to organized crime both in the United States and Asia and the joys of being a husband, father, grandfather and person of faith.
