BOWL-MAKING WORKSHOPS CONTINUE
Those interested in making soup bowls for the Oct. 22 Empty Bowls event at CV United Methodist Church are welcome to come to the workshops in Sierra Madre on July 31; Aug. 7, 14. Experienced potters will be present to guide beginners through the satisfying process of transforming clay into beautiful bowls. Those bowls will be part of a friendly and festive soup event in the fall that will raise substantial aid for local hunger relief agencies. Many hands make light work. Come and join in the fun with other caring neighbors who want to help those in need.
There is a $5 charge to cover the cost of materials.

CELTIC CONSORT OF HOLLYWOOD AT BRAND LIBRARY
On Friday, July 29 the Celtic Consort of Hollywood will be performing as part of the Brand Library Plaza Series at 7 p.m.

The Celtic Consort of Hollywood consists of award winning concert and studio musicians Christina Linhardt (voice), two-time Grammy winner Susan Craig Winsberg (flutes) and Carolyn Sykes (Celtic harp). Together the Celtic Consort bring their love of classical baroque and Irish Celtic music to the Brand Library Plaza, along with a special hands-on harp and petting zoo.
Performances will run 60 and 90 minutes without intermission on the outdoor Plaza. The free performances are supported by the City of Glendale and Glendale Arts & Culture Commission, with funding from the Urban Art Program and the Brand Associates. POTTER LAUNCH PARTY PLANNED
On Saturday, July 30 at midnight, Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books, releases the script book for a new play based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany. The play, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I & II,” written by Jack Thorne, is being published in a special hardcover Rehearsal Edition, and Flintridge Bookstore is throwing a launch party to celebrate. Festivities for the eighth story in the Harry Potter series start at 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 30 and the books become available at midnight.
This is a ticketed event. Pre-orders are recommended. There will also be face painters at the bookstore starting at 1 p.m. so revelers can get adorned and then return for the evening’s activities. The store will also be hosting a costume contest with prizes,
Harry Potter Trivia game with prizes, Find the Golden Snitch game with prizes plus more.

GRAVITAS AT BRAND LIBRARY
Beltran-Arechiga, Nicholette Kominos, Melissa Manfull, Kristan Marvell and Sonja Schenk challenge an evolution of perception in the new exhibition “Gravitas” at the Brand Library & Art Center.
Working in various mediums, the artists are able to create work that upon first viewing appears to have the physicality of weight, of gravity. Concrete blocks, monolithic forms, sturdy structures, complex constructions and yet, upon further reflection, the viewer is led to question the tangibility of the fabrications in front of them. Encouraged to move beyond aesthetic beauty, the question of intent arises and a search for meaning and interpretation begins. In short, viewers are challenged to evolve their perception.

‘FROM COWS TO CONCRETE’ AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
On Sunday, Aug. 7 at 4 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse welcomes sustainable and urban farming experts Rachel Surls and Judith Gerber for a discussion and signing of their book “From Cows to Concrete: The Rise and Fall of Farming in Los Angeles.”
Los Angeles was the original wine country of California, leading the state’s wine production for more than a century. Until the 1950s, Los Angeles County was the agricultural center of North America. And where today’s freeways soar, cows calmly chewed their cud. FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT BEYOND LOSS MINISTRY

BOLTON HALL VISITS MCGROARTY ART CENTER
On Saturday, Aug. 20 from noon to 4 p.m. Bolton Hall docents will provide historical information and tours of the hillside home in Tujunga of John and Ida McGroarty – now McGroarty Arts Center. John and Ida were among the early Sunland-Tujunga pioneers, and John’s accomplishments included writing about the green Verdugo Hills for the L.A. Times and the honors of being a California poet laureate and a U.S. congressman.
The afternoon of McGroarty history is part of the Maiden L.A. Aug. 20-21 art studio event. Maiden L.A. is a weekend when artists across L.A. open their studios to visitors. McGroarty Arts Center will host a number of artists from Sunland-Tujunga and nearby communities for the Maiden L.A. event.

10 p.m. at Glendale Central Park, the Open Arts & Music Festival will highlight the range, influence, and growth of the changing city of Glendale by inviting artists, performers, local businesses and vendors to activate Downtown Glendale. There will be music performances, arts markets and a public art installation, activities for children, and featured businesses.

ART, ARTISTS AND WINE IN IDYLLWILD
On Saturday, Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the Art Alliance of Idyllwild and the Associates of Idyllwild Arts Foundation, both 501(c)(3) organizations, are hosting the Annual Art Walk & Wine Tasting. The event draws over two thousand visitors annually for an afternoon of great wine and art. Art lovers can visit the Art Walk that begins at 10 a.m. It is free to the public and maps will be available at 54295 N. Circle Drive.
Art of Wine begins in the afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. when 18 Southern California wineries from Temecula, Warner Springs, Escondido, Fallbrook, Julian and Idyllwild share a selection of great wines at 13 locations around town. The fall weather makes walking from location to location a fun experience, but shuttles will also be available to transport guests between venues.
There will also be a limited number of tickets available to a Friday night VIP event when wine enthusiasts can mingle with the wineries.
Tickets for the wine tasting are $35 each with a special price of $30 each for groups of 10 or more before Sept. 24. The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
