WOMEN’S COUNCIL LUNCH & LEARN SEXUALITY AND AGING
Today, Thursday, Aug. 9, Amalia Armenta, MD will discuss how to improve the quality of life, restore healthy balance, create mood consistency, relieve anxiety and depression, decrease body fat, increase mental clarity and focus and increase motivation to exercise during a lunch and learn session at USC-VHH.

AUTHOR JACOBS AT GLENDALE LIBRARY
Today, Thursday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m., mystery writer Nova Jacobs will discuss her new book, “The Last Equation of Isaac Severy: A Novel in Clues,” at Glendale’s Downtown Central Library. Debut author Jacobs presents a dazzling and imaginative literary mystery and an immensely satisfying family drama. KIWANIS CLUB GLENDALE HOSTS POLICE CHIEF
Glendale Police Chief Carl Povilaitis is the guest speaker at the Aug. 10 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale.

MUSIC IN THE PARK
The City of La Cañada Music in the Park Summer Concert Series is held at Memorial Park (at the corner of La Cañada and Foothill boulevards) during the summer on Sunday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. These free concerts continue through the end of August. Featured bands play a variety of music from rock and roll, blues, reggae, and country. All are welcome to bring a picnic basket, blankets, and lawn chairs and enjoy an evening with family and friends.
On Aug. 12, Brian Lyn Jones & the Misfit Cowboys will be performing.

 

LEARN HOW TO PAINT
All are invited to a free one-hour painting lesson on Saturday, Aug. 11 from noon to 1 p.m. given by professional artist Marcy Ferro and hosted by the Church of Scientology, Mission of the Foothills. Ferro was born and raised in Los Angeles and is the creator of the You Tube channel Mixed Media Girl which has 100, 000 followers. She also founded the company, The Painter in You, which offers art classes all over the Los Angeles area. Materials will be supplied for the free lesson.

‘REIMAGINING’ AMERICA AT ACE/121 GALLERY
Presented by the Arroyo Arts Collective and Ace/121 Gallery, “Reimagining America” is on view through Sept. 8 at Ace/121 Gallery [hours: Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.].
The personal is political, a slogan used in the 1960s by the student movement and second wave feminism, emphasizes the connections between personal experiences and socio-political structures. “Reimagining America” addresses the myriad issues in times of personal, social and economic uncertainties. The show explores the way images can move us by constructing and changing our social reality.
Artists were invited to submit work that created discussions of power between people, real or imagined. The show is an interpretation of how America can be reimagined through art and active participation.
Reception will be held on Sunday, Aug. 12 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC
Glendale Noon Concerts is a free-admission concert series that takes place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10 p.m. to 12:40 p.m. in the sanctuary of Glendale City Church.
The next concert is on Aug. 15 and features violinist Nancy Roth and pianist Lorenzo Sanchez performing works by William Grant Still, George Walker and Igor Stravinsky.

VERDUGO HUUT! HOSTS ZYZZYX
The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills has opened its acoustically outstanding 100-seat sanctuary to LA folk, alt-country, and acoustic musicians as well as authors, poets, and comedians for the monthly Verdugo HUUT. On Friday, Aug. 17, performers include La Crescenta troubadour Art Stucco and his band, HUUT! regular Carol McArthur, and singer/songwriter Raspin Stuwart, as well as other special guests (including a contest and a special reading of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road”). Following the show is a HUUT!-standard audience singalong. Tickets are $10.

BURGERS, BEER, AND BAND NIGHT AT MC GROARTY
McGroarty Arts Center is hosting a Burgers, Beer and Band Night on Aug. 25 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at its historic location in Tujunga. The concert is featuring Seize the Night, a high-energy band performing classic rock to modern pop.
All are welcome. Burger plate is $15; beer/wine is $5, sodas are $1. Desserts are on average $2.
All the proceeds from the food and beverage sales will go to the McGroarty Arts Center, a non-profit facility.

VILLAGE POETS PRESENT THE ART OF TANKA
The Village Poets’ of Sunland-Tujunga is hosting Monthly Reading Series on Sunday, Aug. 26 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum. Featured poet Kathabela Wilson and friends will present the art of Tanka with musical accompaniment by Rick Wilson. Poets: bring your own poetry and sign-up for the open mic upon arrival.

LOVE TO SING?
The Towne Singers is a non-audition choir that is in need of male voices, but welcome everyone. Rehearsals for the upcoming holiday concert begin Monday, Aug. 27. The 2018 holiday concert, “Spirit of the Season,” is on Friday, Nov. 30.

ROCKHAVEN ON SECOND SATURDAY AGENDA
Bolton Hall Museum’s monthly second Saturday programs return with with the story of Rockhaven on Sept. 8 at 1 p.m.
Rockhaven, located in La Crescenta, was established in 1923 as a refuge for women with mild mental and nervous disorders and is now owned by the City of Glendale. Program speaker Joanna Linkchorst, president of Friends of Rockhaven, will share some of the remarkable stories associated with Rockhaven and hopes for the future. This event is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome.

LOCAL YOGA CLASS
Gentle/level one yoga classes continue on Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s of the Mountains Church.
This class will improve joint mobility, flexibility, muscle strength and balance and will include some restorative yoga poses to help the body heal its own aches and pains by engaging the parasympathetic system. Sessions will be 75 minutes. Instructor is experienced in many forms of yoga. Please bring mat.

FOOTHILLS COMMUNITY TOASTMASTERS CLUB

FREE STROKE SUPPORT GROUP, AND HEART LECTURE
A stroke support group hosted by Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center meets the second Tuesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Rehabilitation Conference Room on the third floor of the hospital.
The support group is open to caregivers, family members, friends and stroke survivors and will help with communication, education, and coping styles while building friendships, solving problems and sharing resources and experience.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).
Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m. This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
