BOWL-MAKING WORKSHOPS CONTINUE

Those interested in making soup bowls for the Oct. 22 Empty Bowls event at CV United Methodist Church are welcome to come to the workshop in Sierra Madre on Aug. 14. Experienced potters will be present to guide beginners through the satisfying process of transforming clay into beautiful bowls. Those bowls will be part of a friendly and festive soup event in the fall that will raise substantial aid for local hunger relief agencies. Many hands make light work. Come and join in the fun with other caring neighbors who want to help those in need.

BOOKSIGNING FOR PEPPER MARTIN

FASO TO PERFORM ‘PETER & THE WOLF’ AMONG OTHERS

The Filipino American Symphony Orchestra (FASO), the only Filipino symphony orchestra outside of the Philippines, will play “Peter & the Wolf,” Sergei Prokofiev’s beloved children’s classic, cherished movie and television tunes, including themes from “Stars Wars” and “Harry Potter” films, Broadway favorites and Filipino music gems. An exciting concert for children and adults, “FASO Plays Prokofiev’s ‘Peter & the Wolf’ “will be staged on Saturday, Aug. 13 at the John Wayne Performing Arts Center.

The FASO Children’s Ensemble and surprise guests conducted by musical director Robert “Bob” Shroder will be featured in the latest concert of FASO, which is noted for its entertaining and quality concerts. FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT BEYOND LOSS MINISTRY

The Beyond Loss Bereavement Ministry in partnership with the Glendale Adventist Medical Center (GAMC) Chaplains’ Dept. and The Healthcare Foundation will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Beyond Loss Bereavement Ministry. MCGROARTY ARTS CENTER HOSTING FREE CONCERT

McGroarty Arts Center is hosting a free concert at its beautiful location in Tujunga featuring the world soul music of L.A. band Cuicani on Aug. 19 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. This is the kickoff event for the weekend and part of the Maiden LA celebrations of art across Los Angeles.

On Aug. 19, the American Legion Post 288 and the VFW Post 1614 will have their 5th Annual Bingo Night in Healy Hall at Holy Redeemer Church in Montrose.

BOLTON HALL VISITS MCGROARTY ART CENTER

On Saturday, Aug. 20 from noon to 4 p.m. Bolton Hall docents will provide historical information and tours of the hillside home in Tujunga of John and Ida McGroarty – now McGroarty Arts Center. John and Ida were among the early Sunland-Tujunga pioneers, and John’s accomplishments included writing about the green Verdugo Hills for the L.A. Times and the honors of being a California poet laureate and a U.S. congressman.

The afternoon of McGroarty history is part of the Maiden L.A. Aug. 20-21 art studio event. Maiden L.A. is a weekend when artists across L.A. open their studios to visitors. McGroarty Arts Center will host a number of artists from Sunland-Tujunga and nearby communities for the Maiden L.A. event.

OPEN ARTS & MUSIC FESTIVAL

On Saturday, Sept. 17 from noon to 10 p.m. at Glendale Central Park, the Open Arts & Music Festival will highlight the range, influence, and growth of the changing city of Glendale by inviting artists, performers, local businesses and vendors to activate Downtown Glendale. There will be music performances, arts markets and a public art installation, activities for children, and featured businesses.

By offering a fluid and active arts experience, festival participants will have an opportunity to enjoy programs such as the Arts Market at OAM, a curated market highlighting inspiring artists and arts organizations based in the greater L.A. area, live musical performances on two separate stages, entry to the Museum of Neon Art (MONA), beer and wine gardens located on-site and offered in partnership with local breweries such as Brewyard Brewing and alcoholic beverage vendors, a temporary public art installation which will be exhibited/screened onto the historic Masonic Temple’s East Wall in Downtown Glendale and a dedicated kids’ area with interactive arts programming such as live performances by various acts and organizations, games, artist-led workshops, a picnic area, and more.

ART, ARTISTS AND WINE IN IDYLLWILD

On Saturday, Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the Art Alliance of Idyllwild and the Associates of Idyllwild Arts Foundation, both 501(c)(3) organizations, are hosting the Annual Art Walk & Wine Tasting. The event draws over two thousand visitors annually for an afternoon of great wine and art. Art lovers can visit the Art Walk that begins at 10 a.m. It is free to the public and maps will be available at 54295 N. Circle Drive.

Art of Wine begins in the afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. when 18 Southern California wineries from Temecula, Warner Springs, Escondido, Fallbrook, Julian and Idyllwild share a selection of great wines at 13 locations around town. The fall weather makes walking from location to location a fun experience, but shuttles will also be available to transport guests between venues.

There will also be a limited number of tickets available to a Friday night VIP event when wine enthusiasts can mingle with the wineries.

Tickets for the wine tasting are $35 each with a special price of $30 each for groups of 10 or more before Sept. 24. 18TH ANNUAL WIGGLE WAGGLE WALK COMING

All are invited to put on their walking shoes on and grab a leash; it’s Wiggle Waggle Walk time! Animal lovers and their canine friends are invited to the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA’s 18th Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk – a community fundraiser for animals – at Brookside Park adjacent to the Rose Bowl. The Walk will start at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25.

Walkers can choose either a one-mile or three-mile route around the outside of the Rose Bowl stadium before enjoying event festivities including K-9 and agility demonstrations, pet-related vendors, contests, and food trucks until noon. Participants do not need a dog to join the fun, just a desire to help animals.

Organizers hope to raise $325,000 from the event, which will provide food, shelter and medical care to the nearly 12,000 homeless animals taken in by the PHS every year.

Walkers can create a team, join an existing team, or register as an individual on the new Wiggle Waggle Walk website. Event registration is $25 per person, and includes an event T-shirt, bib, and bandana for their dog.

Participants can build a personal fundraising page and invite family, friends and co-workers to join the fun. The more money a walker raises, the more prizes they earn.

Early bird registration is open until Sept. 12 and includes a discounted registration fee and an opportunity to pick up the T-shirt and prizes before the Walk.

Event-day registrations opens at 8 a.m., the walk will begin at 9 a.m., and the festivities last until noon. Brookside Park is located at 480 N. Arroyo Blvd. in Pasadena.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays.
