HISTORIC PASADENA WALKING TOUR

Pasadena Heritage hosts a walking tour through the Old Pasadena Historic District on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. One of the trained docents will lead walkers through the Old Pasadena Historic District and reveal its many hidden and unusual architectural details, old alleyways, and historic signs. VOLUNTEER WEEKEND AND CAMPOUT

On Aug. 16-18, Chilao School in the Angeles National Forest is having a volunteer weekend and campout at Chilao School. Volunteers will undertake a variety of projects including painting the caretaker residence with a fire retardant paint, and perhaps getting some scrub oaks limbed up between the house and the school. All are invited to either come for a day or the entire weekend. Camp outside or in the school, sleepover style. There will be showers and flush toilets and everything!

There will be sanding and some nailing/screwing and some tree trimming (providing anyone who shows up brings suitable loppers) and masking off the windows.

VERDUGO HUUT ARTISANAL HOOTENANNY

Each month, Verdugo HUUT (at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 4451 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta) introduces a theme and invites performers from all over LA to present one of the most fun and least expensive nights of entertainment anywhere.

In recognition of the heat wave and a certain iconic 1972 concert at the Greek Theatre, the Verdugo HUUT! presents “HUUT August Night or Shine on You Crazy Neil Diamond.” The night will mix
the music of Neil Diamond and Pink Floyd, two powerhouses that taste great but might not taste great together.

ROUSING HOMELESS DISCUSSION EXPECTED

The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club hosts speaker Daniel Flaming, Ph.D., on Sunday, Aug.18 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living-La Crescenta. He will answer “Homelessness: What Are Your Questions?”

Flaming is president of the Economic Roundtable, a nonprofit urban research organization that creates knowledge for the common good. Its mission is to conduct research and implement programs that contribute to the sustainability of individuals and communities. He’s written op-ed pieces about homelessness in the LA Times and other periodicals. A June op-ed theorized that the key to preventing homelessness is rapid re-employment after a job loss.

Other speakers will be Ron Garber on how to get letters to the editor published and Sandra Chen Lau will talk about changes at PCC, where she is a board member.

SUMMER COOKOUT AT McGROARTY

Arnold has written two memoirs, “Help from Above: How I Went from Sweeping the Floor to Painting the Sky” and “What Lies Above the Clouds: A True Crime Story.” In these books, he shares stories from his personal and professional lives, including thrilling, challenging and sometimes death-defying moments.

Arnold started his Hollywood career with a broom in his hand. Somehow, sweeping the floor got him into some of the world’s biggest TV shows. His first book “Help from Above” tells the unlikely story of mistakes and miracles that took him to some of the most dangerous places on Earth. In his second memoir, “What Lies Above the Clouds,” Arnold takes readers on a life and death adventure flying for the television shows. But he also gets into adventures at home, picking a fight with an organized crime ring of kidnappers, drug dealers, and murderers who terrified his town.

INFO FOR CANCER PATIENTS

On Monday, Aug. 26, a presentation dealing with self-hypnosis for cancer patients will be given at the Cancer Support Community-Pasadena from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. The presentation is free of charge.

Carmela Tunzi of Mind Flow Hypnosis will discuss the benefits of self-hypnosis to help manage symptoms of treatment, reduce stress, and help manage pain. Attendees will learn skills for use on a daily basis.

On Sept. 17 from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m., a discussion about breast cancer prevalence will take place at the Cancer Support Community-Pasadena. The discussion is free of charge.

Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital 50plus Program offers monthly health and fitness lectures and classes and special discounts for those age 50 and older.

An AARP Mature Driving Refresher Class is being held on Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program is designed to refresh senior driving skills and knowledge of the rules and hazards of the road. SUMMER NIGHTS CELEBRATED AT BOLTON HALL

The Little Landers Historical Society and the Village Poets of Sunland Tujunga will be celebrating summer and local history with poetry and a sing-along on the lawn outside the museum.

The Village Poets of Sunland Tujunga is a group comprised of the current and former Poets Laureate of Sunland Tujunga who organize poetry readings in the community, write poetry, publish books (many of which are in the Bolton Hall Museum gift shop) and keep poetry alive in the foothills. SOUTH AMERICA AND CAPE HORN ON ROSTER

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents “Bruce Hale on South America and Cape Horn” on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

Hale travels the world and provides very interesting programs for the local Sierra Club meetings. He will share his experience and perspective of the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of southern Chile, which is located on the small Hornos Island.

AUTRY DOCENT CLASS

The Gene Autry Museum is having a docent class on select Tuesdays and Thursdays, through Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (times may vary).

Autry docents provide guided tours of permanent galleries and special exhibitions to diverse audiences while gaining intimate knowledge of the museum and its collections. Autry docents enjoy many social and professional benefits, including Autry-sponsored parties and gatherings, monthly potlucks, field trips and more.

Autry docents conduct tours for schoolchildren one day during the week or twice a month on weekends for families and adult groups.

No experience necessary. Training includes classes in Western history, art and art history, material culture, education, touring techniques, and more. Responsibilities include providing weekly tours, maintaining active Autry membership, and participating in continuing education both at the museum and throughout the region.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
