FREE STROKE SUPPORT GROUP, AND HEART LECTURE
A stroke support group hosted by Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center meets the second Tuesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Rehabilitation Conference Room on the third floor of the hospital.

The support group is open to caregivers, family members, friends and stroke survivors and will help with communication, education, and coping styles while building friendships, solving problems and sharing resources and experience.

LIBRARY, ARTS & CULTURE PERFORMANCE SERIES
New and established artists and performance groups in diverse genres including classical, jazz, rock and world music will be part of the Library, Arts & Culture Performance Series.

The performances are on Fridays and begin at 7 p.m. at the Brand Library & Art Center. Performances will run 60 and 90 minutes without intermission and will be available to the general public, free of charge. Six of the performances are funded by the Urban Art Fund with the remainder supported by the Brand Associates.

BOOK SIGNING FOR ‘ORHAN’S INHERITANCE’
The community is invited to a book signing event for “Orhan’s Inheritance” by award winning author Aline Ohanesian at the Glendale Adult Recreation Center in Glendale on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. Admission is free. The presentation will be in English.

The book tells the story of Orhan’s grandfather, who is dead, and the will in which he left the family estate to Seda, an Armenian woman who is an apparent stranger thousands of miles away. Her story, if told, has the power to undo the legacy upon which his family has been built.

“Orhan’s Inheritance” is an international bestseller and has been translated into 10 languages. The book was recently long listed for the Center for Fiction’s First Book Award.

Visitors will receive three hours free parking across the street at The Market Place parking structure with validation at the Adult Recreation Center front desk. The program is organized by the Library, Arts & Culture Dept.

ANNUAL CITY GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP PLANNED
The Fourth Annual Glendale City Golf Championship is set for Aug. 20 and Aug. 24. The Glendale Parks and Open Space Foundation, Scholl Canyon Golf Course, Oakmont Country Club, American Golf and The Local Trusted Choice Insurance Agents will host the annual championship to benefit the local parks and open space.

The first round will take place on Aug. 20 at the Scholl Canyon Golf Course in Glendale. There will be four flights. The low 16 in the championship flight and the low eight in the other three flights will advance to Oakmont Country Club on Aug. 24 to compete for the championship.

This is a very unique event with the first round at a par 60, 3,039-yard course and the second round at Oakmont Country Club that will play over 7,000 yards for the championship flight.

Although this is a city championship, golfers of all ages and abilities are welcome to come out and play to support The Glendale Parks and Open Space Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

DRAWING HELPS ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
Los Angeles Belmont Village Communities are raising funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease through an opportunity drawing with giveaways of elegant, eight-place table settings. From now until Sept. 1, those interested in making a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association can stop by Belmont Village Burbank and make a $20 donation for the drawing prize; multiple entries can be accepted and 100% of proceeds go to the Alzheimer’s Association.

This is the second year that Belmont Village has held the fundraiser with last year’s donations reached $12,000 to the Los Angeles-area Alzheimer’s Association.

KIZH GABRIELENO BAND OF MISSION INDIANS TOPIC OF BOLTON HALL PRESENTATION
Little Landers Historical Society and Bolton Hall Museum in Tujunga are resuming their monthly programs after the summer break. On Sept. 12, the program will be about the Kizh Gabrieleno Band of Mission Indians. The speaker is tribal member Tim Povorena-Miguel.

The program tells the story of the Kizh Gabrieleno Mission Indians and their tribal territory, who they are and where they are from. Highlights include unknown facts about an early mayor of Los Angeles, how the tribe’s lands became his land and finally the Huntington Library,

FMWD HOLDING DROUGHT-TOLERANT EVENT
Foothill Municipal Water District (Foothill MWD or District) is having a special drought tolerant landscape and rain barrel event at Descanso Gardens on Sunday, Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is co-hosted with the City of South Pasadena, Pasadena Water & Power, Crescenta Valley Water District, Glendale Water & Power and Burbank Water & Power. Event Programming will include three classes in the Van de Kamp Hall that will cover the fundamentals of harvesting rainwater with rain barrels, greywater use and drought tolerant landscaping.

HEART WALKS COMING
The American Heart Association (AHA) invites the community to its annual Heart Walk at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sept. 26. Team up with family, friends and coworkers and together take steps to fight heart disease and stroke. There is no fee to participate. Register your team at www.HeartWalkLA.org.

The Heart Walk aims to create a culture of health by engaging community members in physical activity and heart-healthy living, while raising much-needed funds to fight heart disease and stroke. In addition to Pasadena, walks will also take place in Long Beach, Santa Clarita and Palmdale. The combined goal for the four walks is to raise $2 million in support of the American Heart Association’s mission of building healthier lives, free of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The CrescentaCañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
