FREE FALLPROOF™ BALANCE & MOBILITY PROGRAM AT THE Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA will host a free informational seminar for the Fallproof™ Balance and Mobility Program on Friday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. This seminar is free and open to the entire community. The seminar will focus on why people lose their balance and what can be done to prevent falling.

Fallproof™  is a scientifically designed and tested program that addresses risk factors for falls and helps to reduce the fear of falling. It was developed through California State University, Fullerton and is part of the Center for Successful Aging.  The program involves informative lecture, testing for balance impairment, and exercises. Students work at their own level and are assessed to measure progress.

Following the seminar, the Fallproof™ class will meet weekly at the Y from Sept. 14-Nov. 2 on Fridays. The seminar and class will be led by Dan Layne and Bobbi Koonse. Layne is certified as a balance and mobility specialist.

DBSA OFFERS SUPPORT GROUP
Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has a support group meeting every Tuesday at Vallejo Drive Adventist Church in Glendale every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. DBSA provides hope, help, and support through peer-based, recovery-oriented, empowering services, and resources when people need them and how they need to receive them. Support groups bring people together who understand the up, downs and frustrations of depression or bipolar disorder. DBSA support groups are a safe confidential place to talk about and overcome the day-to-day and long-term challenges of mental health issues.

MUSIC APPRECIATION CLASS
Dr. Ted Stern, professor of music at Glendale Community College, will again conduct his off-campus music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This ongoing series is for musicians and non-musicians alike who appreciate the history of music.  This semester will address the topic: “An In-depth Look at Six Composers – Monteverdi, Bach, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Verdi and Stravinsky.”

Each semester offers new and interesting information. Dr. Stern weaves music examples with cultural history to increase our understanding of the evolution of music. Classes are held at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, located at 2700 Montrose Avenue in Montrose. The classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 18 and are held each Tuesday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., continuing through Dec. 18. The cost for the 14-week classes is $90. Everyone is welcome! VHAA HOLDING DEMONSTRATION
Verdugo Hills Art Association hosts guest artist Brenda Swenson for an upcoming demonstration event at 7 p.m. on Sept. 7 at La Cañada Community Center. The meeting is open to all.

Swenson is an award winning artist, author and board member for National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West, and the VHAA guest artist for negative painting techniques at the Sept. 7 meeting.

Swenson has been featured in numerous publications. She is in great demand to demonstrate and teach her techniques both in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to the demonstration meeting, Swenson will also conduct a two-day workshop for VHAA members and guests on Oct. 13-14.

GLENDALE BEAUTIFUL HOSTING DINNER
Glendale Beautiful, celebrating its 62nd year, presents its fall dinner, catered by Damon’s, on Friday, Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Casa Adobe San Rafael. Musical entertainment by J.R. Wright, “The Keyboard Kowboy,” including hot country and rockin’ oldies.

The social time with appetizers begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is served at 6 p.m. Desserts will follow dinner.  Attendees will wear western clothes.

Attendees at this fall dinner will be given the opportunity to participate in a draw for opportunity gifts. This event is a fundraiser for Glendale Beautiful that is the steward of the Casa Adobe San Rafael and the City’s Arbor Day activities.

AAUW HOSTS HECK, THOMAS
The American Association of University Women, Glendale branch, will host Dr. Susan Heck and Dr. Don Thomas in a discussion of “Half The Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.” The book focuses on gender discrimination. SUMMER PARTY TO KICK OFF CAMPAIGN SEASON
A summer celebration is planned at the Jeffers estate for Sunday, Sept. 9 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. to kick off the campaign season. It features keynote speaker Pat Boone, emcee Basil Hoffman, Nick “Gunny Pop” Popaditch, U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Emken and local Republican candidates and other special guests.

The cost is $25 per person (pre-paid), $30 per person (at the door).

SIERRA CLUB HOSTS ‘THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS’
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group begins its fall session with David F. Eisenberg’s, “The Galapagos Islands” on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles County Public Library in La Crescenta.

Eisenberg’s presentation about the Galapagos Islands is regarding his National Geographic expedition there.  The community is invited to come to see this fascinating and rare wonderland where animals have no instinctive fear of humans. His slide show will provide a close-up and personal view of many animals, including blue and red-footed boobies, marine and land iguanas and giant tortoises.

TASTE OF GREECE AT GREEK FEST
The 54th Annual Pasadena Greek Fest will be held Friday through Sunday, Sept. 14, 15 and 16, at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia.

Fest hours are from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday; noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday; and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.

Fun activities for the entire family include Greek cuisine, cooking demonstration, a sports bar and cigar lounge, art, culture, Greek lectures, wine tasting, shopping, live entertainment and Kid’s Fun Zone. A special grand prize dream travel certificate valued at $2,500 will be given away. Raffle prizes awarded throughout the weekend include a 51” 3D HD TV, apple iPads, cash and gift certificates totaling over $10,000.

BOLTON HALL DOCENT TRAINING
Beginning Sept. 15, Bolton Hall Museum is offering a new docent training class. This is an opportunity for interested individuals to learn the unique history of Sunland/Tujunga and Bolton Hall while serving as a volunteer docent. Docents can anticipate spending three hours a month to welcome visitors to Bolton Hall and another two hours monthly in training and sharing experiences with other docents.

Classes begin Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon and continue on the third Saturday of most months. Admission to the class is free to Little Landers Historical Society members and $20 for non-members (which establishes an individual membership for you).
