LE SALON DE MUSIQUES KICKS OFF SEASON

KIWANIS TO HOLD 11TH ANNUAL WINE AND GOURMET FOOD TASTING EVENT
The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada is holding its popular annual Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event on Sunday, Oct. 6 in Memorial Park on Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada Flintridge. Visitors from will come together to enjoy food and wine provided by local merchants. The tastings begin at 3 p.m. and are followed by the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation’s (LCFEF) premium wine auction from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event, as mandated by law, is for adults only due to the presence of alcoholic beverages. POP UP! CONCERTS CONTINUE IN GLENDALE
Beginning on Oct. 6, POP UP! concerts will take place in the Glendale Galleria. This month-long music concert series is on every Sunday in October from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Macy’s Court, lower level at the shopping center.

Throughout the series, artists will perform a variety of music ranging from rock, smooth and classic jazz and techno music.

On Sunday, Oct. 6 Sean Wiggins & Lone Goat will provide rock, blues and country music.

SQUARE DANCE CLUB NEW SEASON
The Sets in Step Square Dance Club is sponsoring a new beginners’ class for beginners or those who want to refresh their dancing. UTOPIA FOUND AT LITTLE LANDERS
Little Landers Historical Society announces the next in its series of monthly programs.  October’s program, Utopia, takes place on Oct. 12 and is a fascinating journey into the Utopian Society movement of the early 1900s including its own Los Terrenitos – The Little Lands Colony. The speaker for this program is Paul Greenstein, a local historian, preservationist and co-author of “Bread and Hyacinths-The Rise and Fall of Utopian Los Angeles.”

Join us for a look at the political and social environments that gave rise to the Southern California utopian colonies and the movement that provided the original motivation for the creation of Bolton Hall.

K-9s IN THE PARK
The Glendale Police Foundation is hosting its fifth annual K-9s in the Park on Oct. 12 at Verdugo Park. This free, family‐oriented and dog-friendly event will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Last year over 5,000 people enjoyed the unique and highly popular event. This is the primary fundraiser for the Glendale Police K‐9 Unit.

Attendees can see live police K‐9 demonstrations and dog obedience displays, enter their dog in a costume contest or have their dog’s running speed clocked with a radar gun. There will be face painting, a climbing wall, bounce houses, and a balloon artist for the kids. The Office of the Glendale City Clerk and Vet Care will provide low‐cost vaccinations as well as microchips for cats and dogs. The Pasadena

Humane Society will offer pet adoptions as well.

Over 25 vendors and dog-related organizations will display their wares. Finally, the Kiwanis Grill Team will sell picnic fare from their food truck.

FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT BRAND LIBRARY
The Associates of Brand Library & Art Center is hosting a fundraising event on Saturday, Oct. 12. Glendale Collects is from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and is the first of many gatherings planned in private homes of Glendale’s passionate collectors of original works by artists and artisans. The event will feature an evening of wine, hors d’oeuvres, live music, art viewing and a silent art auction. Proceeds from ticket sales will be used to restore and frame six original ceiling painting fragments recovered at the Brand Mansion (originally Leslie Brand’s home, now the library) during its renovation.

RATH TO SPEAK AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
On Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse presents a discussion and booksigning for Julia Rath’s “Conquering Your Own Sleep Apnea the All-Natural Way.” This informative resource includes sections on restless leg syndrome and associated chronic insomnia and shows how making sensible diet and lifestyle changes can curb sleep apnea, a potentially life-threatening disorder.  The book is based on the author’s personal story.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. CHARITY FASHION SHOW
The non-profit Croatian American Women’s Club is hosting a fashion show charity event on Oct. 5 in San Pedro to benefit Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women & Children, a program of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. The club was formed in 2011 to support worthwhile causes in Southern California while preserving the rich Croatian culture, traditions and values.

HUNTINGTON HOSPITAL PARTNERS WITH THE CCLCF
Huntington Hospital has developed a partnership with the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge to offer health and safety classes for the residents in La Cañada Flintridge and the surrounding the Foothill communities.

On Oct. 19 and Oct. 26 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Huntington Hospital’s ER nurse manager and La Cañada resident Karen Knudsen and her team will lead two free community classes for CPR training. This non-certification class will give individuals hands-on experience with a CPR mannequin. In a short time participants will know the basics to hands-only CPR that could save a life.

PASADENA HEART WALK COMING
The American Heart Association invites the community to the 2013 Pasadena Heart Walk at the Rose Bowl on Oct. 19. The annual 5K, sponsored nationally by Subway and Jenny Craig and locally by Union Bank and UCLA Health, aims to raise awareness and funds to fight heart disease and stroke while promoting healthy habits, such as walking, as a regular part of life. In addition to Pasadena, there will be Heart Walks in Antelope Valley, Pomona, Downtown L.A., Santa Clarita, Santa Monica and Long Beach. The overall goal in Greater Los Angeles is to raise $1.75 million.

There is no fee to participate. Walkers are eligible to receive a free Heart & Stroke Walk T-shirt when they raise $100 or more.

VAN BLOEM SINGERS HOLDING AUDITIONS    
Auditions are being held for the Van Bloem Singers, a volunteer singing group that has completed its 21st season having performed more than 800 shows. The group is looking for those interested in performing Broadway and contemporary music.

Being able to “sight read” is not necessary, but some performing experience is preferred. Men and women who are able to perform between noon and 3 p.m. on weekdays and on an occasional evening, Saturday or Sunday can apply. Rehearsals are Monday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Chapel of the Burbank Salvation  Army.

The Van Bloem Singers perform more than 30 shows each year for service clubs, volunteer organizations, retiree and church groups, senior residences and  health care facilities, however, singers need not make every performance.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly infant lactation and development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
