KIWANIS CLUB GLENDALE WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT
The newly elected Kiwanis – Glendale president Stacey Nishi will be the focus of the Oct. 5 lunch meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale.
Guests are welcome at the lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15.

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS
Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This new series will mark the beginning of the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike and explores the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “Musicals in the 20th Century.”
The 10-week series of classes continues every Tuesday through Dec. 4 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

TWILIGHT TOUR AT LANTERMAN HOUSE
The La Cañada landmark the Lanterman House will be lit up for the evening of Oct. 4, tonight, giving guests the chance to stroll the patios outside and peer in through the windows to imagine the lives of the Lanterman family more than a century ago.
The Twilight Tour is free for Lanterman House members. New members are welcome and will receive a 10% discount off annual membership for attending the event. Wine and light refreshments will be served on the porch.

GATHERING OF CALIFORNIA’S POETS LAUREATE
Join California Poet Laureate Dana Gioia for a special statewide gathering on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. of city, regional and county laureates from across California. The occasion will feature a historic group reading by more than 60 poets laureate, a panel discussion on the civic role of poet to community and special guest readings from renowned California laureates, past and present.
The free event takes place at the McGroarty Arts Center in Tujunga. The McGroarty Arts Center is the former home of John S. McGroarty, California’s third poet laureate, from 1933 to 1944. Today, his beautiful hillside home houses a vibrant community arts center.

NINTH SEASON FOR SALON DE MUSIQUES
The ninth season kickoff of Salon de Musiques is on Oct. 7 and is titled, “Masters Rediscovered.” It celebrates three European masters: Purcell, Schubert and Mendelssohn.
It will be performed by Jessica Guideri, violin, Serena McKinney, violin, Rob Brophy, viola and Gabriel Martins, cello. An informal Q&A with the artists will follow the performance and a gourmet high tea buffet provided by Patina that includes French champagne will be served.

ASID HOSTING HOME TOUR
The American Society of Interior Designers – ASID – is hosting a semi-guided home tour that features three private residences and gardens. The tour is on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $40 and includes free parking and shuttle service.

REYNOLDSES TO PRESENT AT CV SIERRA CLUB
World travelers Gabrielle and Patrick Reynolds will make a presentation to the Crescenta Valley Sierra Club on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd.
“Three-and-a-Half Adventurers Head Out to See the Solar Eclipse and End up in Canada” are photos of the Reynolds’ trip north in August 2017 including spectacular shots of the solar eclipse as seen from a vineyard in Silverton, Oregon. Heading north, they photographed landscapes, ferry rides and wild fruit on Whidby Island outside Seattle, and Salt Spring Island off of Vancouver, Canada.

LEARNING ABOUT ‘THE HUMAN BLOODHOUND’
On Oct. 13 at 1 p.m., Little Landers Historical Society is hosting speaker Joan Renner. Renner has knowledge of historic Los Angeles crimes and has appeared on several television programs regarding interesting crimes and criminals. She will be exploring the work of Norris Stensland who was a member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. from the early 1920s to 1951.During that period he worked on some of the most sensational crimes in county history and earned a reputation as the “human bloodhound” for his persistence in crime solving.

AGRAWAL SPEAKER AT AAUW

Guest speaker will be Jagriti Agrawal, a recent graduate of the California Institute of Technology. Agrawal is a scientist in the artificial intelligence group at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She will discuss the NASA project on the Mars 2020 onboard scheduler. The Mars 2020 rover mission is part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort of robotic exploration of the Red Planet.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m. This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
