BOOKSTORE HOSTS AFTERNOON OF POETRY, MUSIC AND MORE
Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse in La Cañada is hosting Writing the Body, an afternoon of poetry, art and music presented by Poets on Site. Poets on Site is an on going cooperative writing and performance group created in Pasadena by Kathabela Wilson in 2008. The event takes place on Sunday, Oct. 10, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the bookstore.
This event is part of a series of monthly poetry programs hosted by Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse.

COMMUNITY INVITED TO FAMILY DRUM CIRCLE AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada YMCA is celebrating the end of national Arts week with a family drum circle event at the Y on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the community.
A drum circle is a fun, family friendly event when people empower each other in the act of celebrating community and life through rhythm and music. It is a tool for unity and is open to anyone; no musical experience is necessary. Participants will express themselves collectively by using a chorus of drums, percussion and vocals to create songs together.

WOMAN’S CLUB HOSTING HOBE SPEAKER
On Wednesday, Oct. 13, the La Crescenta Woman’s Club will present a speaker from HOBE (Hugh O’Brien Youth), an organization that holds leadership workshops for second year high school students who are sponsored by groups such as the Woman’s Club along with a participating school. AUTUMN AIR CELEBRATES PLEIN AIR PAINTING
Autumn Air, an artful celebration of plein air painting and the changing of the seasons, comes to Descanso Gardens Oct. 16-17 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Under the famed Descanso oaks, meet local artists working in the Gardens and selling their works. NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC
Glendale Noon Concerts is a free admission concert series taking place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10-12:40 p.m. in the newly restored chapel and sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Glendale (downtown at Louise & Wilson, no religious affiliation). On Oct. 20 pianist Rosa LoGiudice will be performing 3 Nocturnes by Chopin. She will be joined by violinist Jacqueline Suzuki in the Fairy Tales by Robert Schumann. The Glendale Noon Concerts is celebrating the bicentennials of both composers.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES LECTURE SERIES AT THE Y
Next in the lecture series on health this fall at the Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA is What is Qigong? Attendees will find out how Qigong is a tool for those suffering from chronic medical condition or for those wishing to maintain optimal health and calmness. It is presented by Antoinette Rohner and Simone Alexandrino, directors of Moving into Peace. Rohner also teaches Qigong at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center and has a private acupressure practice.
The lecture takes place on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Patio Room.
LITTLE LANDERS PRESENTS SOUTHWEST MUSEUM HISTORY
From ground breaking in November of 1912 to the day it opened its doors in August of 1914 and right up to present day, the Southwest Museum is a testament to the cultural heritage of Los Angeles. Southwest Museum stands atop Mount Washington, also known as Museum Hill, and has been instrumental in preserving the history of the American Southwest, with a focus on Native American artifacts.
On Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1:00 p.m. the Little Landers Society welcomes speakers Nicole Possert and Ann Walnum, two founders of the Friends of the Southwest Museum Coalition. The Coalition has worked with scores of residents and organizations throughout the region committed to preserving the first museum in Los Angeles.
The program is free. Everyone is welcome.

PATRONS’ CLUB ANNOUNCES FASHION SHOW PLANS
The Patrons’ Club of Glendale Community College is holding its annual scholarship fashion show/luncheon/silent auction on Friday, Nov. 5, commencing at 11:30 a.m. at The Castaway Restaurant, 1250 Harvard Road in Burbank.
This year’s theme is Autumn Magic. The price for the luncheon will be $45 and reservations can be made by calling Betty Musacco, (818) 243-0908. Reservation deadline is Oct. 23. There will be many prizes including a $1,000 cash prize.
BABYSITTING CLASSES FOR KIDS BEING HELD
The Verdugo Hills Hospital BEGINNINGS Family Education Program offers babysitting classes designed for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 15. The babysitting class is an interactive course that teaches participants valuable skills, including infant/child CPR, basic first aid, home/auto safety, accident prevention, telephone skills, safety tips, when to call 911, poison control, fire/earthquake plans and other helpful childcare advice. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a babysitting course completion certificate.
Upcoming babysitting classes are being held on Nov. 20 and Dec. 11. Each class is a single, one-time class, held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Classes are offered at VHH, located at 1812 Verdugo Blvd. in Glendale in the Council Room (located on the fourth floor).

CVHS CHORAL ALUMS WANTED
Former members of choral groups at Crescenta Valley High School are invited to take part in the CVHS Alumni Chorale. The group, composed of CVHS choral alumni men and women, rehearse once a week on Wednesdays from 7:15 p.m. – 9:15 p.m., at the Glendale First United Methodist Church. The group performs for local civic groups and retirement homes in Pasadena, Glendale, La Crescenta, Montrose and Duarte during the holiday season and again in the late spring/early summer. After the holiday season performances the group will resume rehearsals in the middle of January 2011.
