GLENDALE KIWANIS

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale meets on Fridays at noon. On Oct. 18, Dr. Ryan Corrner of GCC will provide a presentation on the state of the college.

The cost to attend Friday meetings, which includes lunch and program, is $20. All are welcome.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St. in Glendale.

DANCING AS EXERCISE

Dancing As Exercise is a free ongoing weekly event sponsored by the Los Angeles County Park program for seniors (50 plus) as a form of staying healthy.

There is live music every Friday (note new day) from 10 a.m. to noon in the Park’s building at 3901 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta.

Light refreshments and water are provided along with socialization and information about other park activities.

Dancing, per se, is not required; single persons are welcome.

CANASTA IS CALLING

Canasta – an activity that will brighten your day with fun and relaxation. Those who have not played before – don’t worry; you will be taught! Come on Tuesday afternoons to play canasta from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Montrose Library, 2465 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose (818) 548-2048.

THE BURBANK AFRICAN VIOLET SOCIETY

The Burbank African Violet Society will be having its next club meeting today, Thursday morning, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. at The Little White Chapel Christian Church, 1711 N. Avon St. in Burbank.

The program, “A Dawg Show,” will be presented by club member Beverlee Nelson. There will five classes with awards being given in each of the classes. In addition to first, second and third place, there will be an award and certificate given to the member for best in show. 

Questions and answers will follow the show.

There are raffle and silent auction tables, show ‘n’ tell, plants and supplies available for sale. Refreshments are served and friendships are made. Guests are welcome.

BINGO NIGHT AND FOOD DRIVE

The Glendale Moose Lodge #641 is having its third annual community bingo night and food drive on Saturday, Oct. 19. It is being held at the Verdugo Hills Memorial hall, 4011 La Crescenta Ave. in Glendale/La Crescenta. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., the first game is at 6 p.m. The cost is $25 for 10 game cards (four cards each game).

Participants who donate a bag or box of food will receive one free game for each box or bag donated. All net proceeds benefit the Bailey Center food bank in Tujunga.

ANNUAL FALL FESTIVAL AT PACIFIC COMMUNITY CENTER & PARK

The Annual Fall Festival takes place on Oct. 26 at Pacific Community Center in Glendale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This family-friendly event includes games, arts & crafts, music, a bounce house, a pumpkin patch, carnival games and the Glendale Rocks! climbing wall, food vendors and more.

LCFTRA HOSTS WINE AND ROSES EVENT

The La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association is kicking-off its annual campaign to raise funds for its entry in the 136th Rose Parade on Jan. 1, 2025. The annual gala fundraiser, Wine and Roses, will be held on Nov. 2 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the campus of Flintridge Sacred

Heart Academy, 440 St. Katherine Drive in La Cañada Flintridge.

The gala has a new look this year with exhibits from community partners at Mt. Wilson Observatory, Cal Tech and more. The 2025 float entry is a spin off of the Mars Rover.

On Nov. 2, attendees will be serenaded by the internationally acclaimed All American Boys Chorus of Costa Mesa (taabc.org), and have a spirited live and silent auction plus culinary delights from the chefs of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.

SUZUKI MUSIC PROGRAM GALA, FESTIVAL AND SILENT AUCTION

The Suzuki Music Program of Los Angeles (SMPLA) is celebrating its 50th anniversary throughout 2024. A gala benefit concert and fall festival, with a silent auction, will be on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn in Glendale in the HOCR Hall. The gala concert will include the Colburn School performing group the “Unfourgettable” Guitar Quartet, plus winners of major SoCal competitions. Those who have sustained SMPLA over the last 50 years will be honored.

The fall festival, co-hosted with the Suzuki Music Association of California (SMAC-LA) will be a full on “Suzuki play-in” with violins, violas, cellos, basses and guitars.

Donations are also gladly accepted for Suzuki music education.

PICKLEBALL FUN AT COUNTRY CLUB

A day of pickleball, camaraderie and community spirit takes place on Sunday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. The country club is hosting the First Annual Posh Pickleball Tournament, a fundraiser for Adventist Health Glendale. An anticipated 250 players, participants and spectators are expected to take part in matches and activities including food and beverages throughout the day, introduction to pickleball clinics by iPickle, a VIP & Relaxation lounge, physician tips and a Wellness Village.

BRUNCH AND CONCERT FUNDRAISER

Soroptimist International of Glendale and the Glendale Community College Music Department are presenting a scholarship brunch and concert at GCC featuring Symphony of the Verdugos, Jewel City Jazz Combo and more on Sunday, Nov. 10. The brunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the concert at 1:15 p.m. Funds go to the SIG scholarship for performing arts students at GCC.

CELEBRITY BOWLING PARTY

The annual Bowl For Ronnie celebrity bowling party, benefiting the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org), is set for Thursday, Nov. 14. The event, to be held at PINZ Bowling Center in Studio City, will again be hosted by television and radio personality Eddie Trunk, who is heard on SiriusXM’s 103 Faction Talk channel. Bowl For Ronnie will feature a celebrity bowling tournament and a raffle drawing for prizes and memorabilia. Last year’s bowling event sold out in advance and raised more than $80,000 for the cancer charity, now in its 15th year of raising awareness and much-needed funding for cancer research. 

The evening of fun, food and, of course, bowling with rockers and celebrities competing for trophies kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with open bowling and a VIP pre-party for lane sponsors, celebrities and their guests. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the Bowl For Ronnie will go to the Dio Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org).

Lane sponsorships are now on sale and participants are encouraged to gather friends, family and co-workers for the ultimate bowling team.

ACTIVITIES AT SUNLAND SENIOR CENTER

The Sunland Senior Center offers a selection of classes and activities daily. Whether seniors are looking to exercise or dance or are interested in art, theater, or knitting, the Center has something for everyone. Sunland also hosts bingo on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and a movie matinee on the big screen at 1 p.m. on Thursdays; on Mondays and Fridays there is country line dancing from noon-1:30 p.m. The Sunland Senior Center runs programming from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a donations-based lunch served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
