PROGRAMS FOR CANCER PATIENTS

Today, Thursday, Oct. 21 from noon to 1 p.m. Jan-Kees Van Der Gaag, a former professional opera singer, will give a talk on the use of operatic music in coping with a cancer diagnosis, survivorship and grief.

On Oct. 22 from 5.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. a presentation will be given about mindfulness as an aid to cancer patients

Heather Gross, certified yoga instructor, will offer guided meditation, gentle movement, breath work, and sound healing. The presentation will end with a brief discussion and a mindful “check in.”

The programs are free of charge.

TGHS PRESENTS: IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?

The Glendale Historical Society presents “Is There a Doctor in the House?” a paranormal investigation of the Doctors House Museum. The complimentary event is today, Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.; advance RSVP required.

Historical researcher and ghost expert Craig Owens has been tasked to discover if the Doctors House is indeed haunted.

Join museum director Laura Crook as she and Mr. Owens discuss why Victorian architecture is often presumed to be haunted and whether or not that assumption applies to the 1890s house museum. The findings will be shared and audio evidence analyzed from two recent investigations.

NEXT MEETING OF BURBANK AFRICAN VIOLET SOCIETY

The Burbank African Violet Society will be having its next club meeting today, Thursday morning, Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. at The Little White Chapel Christian Church, 1711 N. Avon St. in Burbank.

The program will be “A Dawg Show.” Members and guests are asked to bring their most challenging African violet to the meeting. The necessary techniques will be shared on how to turn these “dawgs” into beautiful African violets. Questions and answers will follow.

There is a raffle and silent auction tables. Refreshments are served and friendships are made. Guests are always welcome to attend the meetings.

PAUL HADDAD AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

Today, Thursday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore welcomes Paul Haddad, author of the recently released novel “Paradise Palms: Red Menace Mob.” Haddad is the author of the Los Angeles Times’ bestseller “10,000 Steps a Day in L.A.: 57 Walking Adventures,” which takes readers to obscure and iconic LA. landmarks. He is a native Angeleno with a passion for the city and its history. “Paradise Palms” is set in Los Angeles in October 1957, a time of Eisenhower conformity, police and mob strongholds, and Red Scare paranoia. A relic of Hollywood’s Golden Age, the aging Paradise Palms Hotel is on the brink of change. David Shapiro – eldest son of recently widowed Max Shapiro – has assumed a leadership role. But the more he digs into the hotel’s business, the more he questions who his father is. COMMUNITY BINGO NIGHT & FOOD DRIVE

Glendale Moose Lodge No. 641 is hosting its inaugural community bingo night and food drive on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Verdugo Hills Memorial Hall. FRANKLY SPEAKING ABOUT LUNG CANCER

A presentation about lung cancer will be given at the Cancer Support Community-Pasadena on Tuesday, Oct. 26 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The presentation is free of charge.

Dr. Argelia Jossie Sandoval, assistant professor at City of Hope, will speak about types of lung cancer, treatment, side effects, clinical trials and emotional concerns.

FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE WELCOMES BERNSTEIN

On Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore welcomes Ken Bernstein, author of “Preserving Los Angeles: How Historic Places Can Transform America’s Cities,” for an outdoor multimedia presentation on how historic preservation has revived Los Angeles neighborhoods, created a downtown renaissance, and guided the future of the city.

“Preserving Los Angeles” is a chronicle of urban transformation and a guide for citizens and urban practitioners who hope to preserve the unique culture of their own cities. Bernstein’s text is illustrated with full-color images by prominent architectural photographer Stephen Schafer.

Bernstein is a principal city planner for the Los Angeles Dept. of City Planning. Schafer is an architectural photographer who crisscrosses America documenting significant places for the National Register of Historic Places and the Historic American Buildings Survey collection at the Library of Congress.

The La Crescenta Woman’s Club is having a fundraiser at Chipotle, 895 Foothill Blvd. “A” in La Cañada on Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, Nov. 27 from 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (weather-permitting), Flintridge Bookstore hosts special events for Small Business Saturday including author meet and greets and book signings, poetry readings, guest artists and more. To keep everyone as safe as possible during COVID times, most of Flintridge Bookstore’s activities are outside this year, but the doors are also open for in-store shopping. VHHS PLANS REUNION

“Team 74” is planning a 50th high school reunion in 2024. Friends and graduates of Verdugo Hills High School are invited to attend to trade stories of family, careers, adventures and anything else.

Currently Team 74 is in the planning phase of collecting names and numbers of classmates and putting together a database; emails from classmates can be received at clsof74reunion@yahoo.com. Information should include a mailing address, cell number and graduate’s name at graduation (if different than now).

A list of frequently asked questions will be provided to keep everyone updated as the reunion plans move forward. Those who belong to various VHHS groups will see redundant information to ensure all classmates are notified and have an opportunity to attend.

At this time the FB VHHS groups will be the reunion information outlet until a more focused site is created.
