GLENDALE KIWANIS

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale meets on Fridays at noon. On Oct. 25, Assemblymember Laura Friedman will make a presentation to the Club.

The cost to attend Friday meetings, which includes lunch and program, is $20. All are welcome.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St. in Glendale.

 

CELEBRATE NATIONAL STAMP COLLECTING MONTH 

October is National Stamp Collecting Month, a time to celebrate the rich history and joy of philately. This month is the perfect opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of postage stamps. One way to get involved is by joining the Glendale/La Crescenta Stamp Club, a community of stamp enthusiasts that meets regularly to share their passion for this timeless hobby.

The Glendale/La Crescenta Stamp Club meets every third Tuesday at the LA County Library – La Crescenta located at the corner of La Crescenta Avenue and Foothill Boulevard, 2809 Foothill Blvd., in the second floor community room at 7 p.m.

DANCING AS EXERCISE

Dancing As Exercise is a free ongoing weekly event sponsored by the Los Angeles County Park program for seniors (50 plus) as a form of staying healthy.

There is live music every Friday (note new day) from 10 a.m. to noon in the Park’s building at 3901 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta.

Light refreshments and water are provided along with socialization and information about other park activities.

Dancing, per se, is not required; single persons are welcome.

 

CANASTA IS CALLING

Canasta – an activity that will brighten your day with fun and relaxation. Those who have not played before – don’t worry; you will be taught! Come on Tuesday afternoons to play canasta from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Montrose Library, 2465 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose (818) 548-2048.

 

CVIM PRESENTS FALL MUSIC ‘SPOOKTACULAR’

The finest musicians of the Crescenta Valley High School Music Dept. will be performing for a fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the CV amphitheater and upper field. Bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the outdoor concert.

ANNUAL FALL FESTIVAL AT PACIFIC COMMUNITY CENTER & PARK

The Annual Fall Festival takes place on Oct. 26 at Pacific Community Center in Glendale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This family-friendly event includes games, arts & crafts, music, a bounce house, a pumpkin patch, carnival games and the Glendale Rocks! climbing wall, food vendors and more.

CCLCF BOASTS SEVERAL EVENTS

Senior activities at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge include:

Artwork auction on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the CCLCF auditorium.

Standard pricing for participants of the Thanksgiving Day Run. Kids 1 Mile Training Program is a brand new program for kids who are registered for the run. Volunteers are also needed for an assortment of duties.

THE CALTECH THEATER PRESENTS ‘EARTH DATA/THE MUSICAL’

 The Caltech Theatre presents “Earth Data/The Musical,” directed by Brian Brophy, is an original science-driven show created and performed by a team of engineers, technologists, researchers and local artists. LCFTRA HOSTS WINE AND ROSES EVENT

The La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association is kicking-off its annual campaign to raise funds for its entry in the 136th Rose Parade on Jan. 1, 2025. The annual gala fundraiser, Wine and Roses, will be held on Nov. 2 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the campus of Flintridge Sacred

Heart Academy, 440 St. Katherine Drive in La Cañada Flintridge.

The gala has a new look this year with exhibits from community partners at Mt. Wilson Observatory, Cal Tech and more. The 2025 float entry is a spin off of the Mars Rover.

On Nov. 2, attendees will be serenaded by the internationally acclaimed All American Boys Chorus of Costa Mesa (taabc.org), and have a spirited live and silent auction plus culinary delights from the chefs of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.

SUZUKI MUSIC PROGRAM GALA, FESTIVAL AND SILENT AUCTION

The Suzuki Music Program of Los Angeles (SMPLA) is celebrating its 50th anniversary throughout 2024. A gala benefit concert and fall festival, with a silent auction, will be on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn in Glendale in the HOCR Hall. The gala concert will include the Colburn School performing group the “Unfourgettable” Guitar Quartet, plus winners of major SoCal competitions. Those who have sustained SMPLA over the last 50 years will be honored.

The fall festival, co-hosted with the Suzuki Music Association of California (SMAC-LA) will be a full on “Suzuki play-in” with violins, violas, cellos, basses and guitars.

Donations are also gladly accepted for Suzuki music education.

‘HELLO NORMA JEANETHE MARILYN MONROE YOU DIDN’T KNOW’

All are invited to Bolton Hall Museum at 1 p.m. on Nov. 9 for little known facts about Marilyn Monroe.  Before her success on the big screen, Marilyn was Norma Jeanne Baker and used to hang out at local lakes and pools. Many myths surround this Hollywood icon and the speaker for this program, Elisa Jordan, will share the facts about Marilyn’s life.

Hollywood researcher and writer Jordan has been a Marilyn Monroe fan since the age of 5 and has written extensively and appeared in documentaries about her. Her book about Marilyn will be available for purchase after the program.

This event is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome.

RHAPSODY FOUND AT CALTECH

The Caltech Wind Orchestra presents its fall concert, titled Rhapsody, on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9 and Nov. 10 in Ramo Auditorium.

The concerts feature the same program of music by Gershwin, Badings and Ito. The featured work is Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” celebrating its 100th anniversary, with special guest piano soloist Bernadene Blaha. Saturday’s concert will be joined by CSU Long Beach Wind Symphony (Jermie Arnold, conductor) and Sunday’s concert will be joined by Symphonic Winds of The Pacific (Stephen Rochford, conductor).

BRUNCH AND CONCERT FUNDRAISER

Soroptimist International of Glendale and the Glendale Community College Music Department are presenting a scholarship brunch and concert at GCC featuring Symphony of the Verdugos, Jewel City Jazz Combo and more on Sunday, Nov. 10. The brunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the concert at 1:15 p.m. Funds go to the SIG scholarship for performing arts students at GCC.

CELEBRITY BOWLING PARTY

The annual Bowl For Ronnie celebrity bowling party, benefiting the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org), is set for Thursday, Nov. 14. The event, to be held at PINZ Bowling Center in Studio City, will again be hosted by television and radio personality Eddie Trunk, who is heard on SiriusXM’s 103 Faction Talk channel. Bowl For Ronnie will feature a celebrity bowling tournament and a raffle drawing for prizes and memorabilia. Last year’s bowling event sold out in advance and raised more than $80,000 for the cancer charity, now in its 15th year of raising awareness and much-needed funding for cancer research. 

The evening of fun, food and, of course, bowling with rockers and celebrities competing for trophies kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with open bowling and a VIP pre-party for lane sponsors, celebrities and their guests. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the Bowl For Ronnie will go to the Dio Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org).

Lane sponsorships are now on sale and participants are encouraged to gather friends, family and co-workers for the ultimate bowling team.

KIWANIS CLUB OF THE VERDUGOS HOSTS BINGO NIGHT

On Saturday, Nov. 16 the Kiwanis Club of the Verdugos is hosting a bingo night at Verdugo Hills Memorial Hall, 4011 La Crescenta Ave. in La Crescenta. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.; games start at 6 p.m.

Admission is $25 for 10 game cards. Bingo is limited to 150 players; advanced ticket purchase is recommended. Sponsorships are available. Food and beverages available for purchase.  

A sock drive supporting Glendale Police Dept. community outreach is being held. Those who bring in three or more pairs of new socks (any size or style) will receive one free pre-game opener bingo card.

ACTIVITIES AT SUNLAND SENIOR CENTER

The Sunland Senior Center offers a selection of classes and activities daily. Whether seniors are looking to exercise or dance or are interested in art, theater, or knitting, the Center has something for everyone. Sunland also hosts bingo on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and a movie matinee on the big screen at 1 p.m. on Thursdays; on Mondays and Fridays there is country line dancing from noon-1:30 p.m. The Sunland Senior Center runs programming from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a donations-based lunch served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
