A community support group for persons with fibromyalgia and/or arthritis meets monthly at La Cañada Presbyterian Church for personal and social support, and education in lifestyle management of these difficult medical issues.

HALLOWEEN TALES AND RECIPES AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
Today, Thursday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse welcomes the mother/daughter team of Gabrielle and Sonya Gropman to share “The German-Jewish Cookbook: Recipes and History of a Cuisine,” which includes over 100 recipes and is the first book on the subject in 100 years. There will be a signing and tasting.
This cookbook features recipes for German-Jewish cuisine as it existed in Germany prior to World War II and as refugees later adapted it in the United States and elsewhere.
Then on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse presents veteran storytellers “Uncle” Ruthie Buell, True Thomas and Gillian Cameron in a concert of stories and songs for Halloween at the store. Each of these performers brings their own unique store of tales and songs to a performance that is suitable for all ages.
Singer, songwriter, educator, and poet Uncle Ruthie Buell is a Los Angeles icon, having hosted her children’s radio program “Halfway Down the Stairs with Uncle Ruthie” on KPFK for 57 years.
True Thomas the Storyteller, another Southern California fixture, has shared his stories and wealth of folklore, as well as his knowledge of the art of storytelling for decades and has performed and trained at schools, libraries, festivals, and conventions throughout the Southland.
Gillian Cameron is an educator, writer, cartoonist, filmmaker and storyteller who has been sharing folktales and ballads in Southern California and elsewhere for three decades. She is also the artist and writer of the weekly webcomic Calogrenant that can be seen at calogrenant.com.

KIDS (NOT TOO SCARY) HALLOWEEN HAUNTED HOUSE
On Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills is having its yearly Halloween  Haunted House that is a fun experience  and a ”safe place” to bring the kids. Last year it was a full house with over 800 visitors on Halloween night! The place was filled with ghouls, goblins, witches and many other characters, some beautiful and fairy-like, some a bit more on the creepy side (but not “too creepy”). This is a perfect haunted house for younger children ages 3-9. The evening will include free tours through the haunted maze ending off with a free photo of your child in costume. LOCAL AUTHOR PANEL
Local writers Petrea Burchard, G.B. Pool and Bonnie Schroeder will discuss their books, their writing process, and how their varied backgrounds led them to the writing profession on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the newly remodeled Downtown Glendale Central Library.
Burchard is an actress and voice-over artist as well as a writer, and her acting experiences are reflected in both her adventure fiction “Camelot and Vine” and in her humorous non-fiction book “Act As If: Stumbling Through Hollywood with Headshot in Hand.”
Pool is a former newspaper reporter and private investigator as well as the author of the Johnny Casino and Gin Caulfield mystery series, several stand-alone mysteries, and a series of Christmas-themed books. A member of Sisters in Crime, she has also taught workshops on the craft of writing.
Bonnie Schroeder’s debut novel, “Mending Dreams,” was followed this year by her second novel, “Write My Name on the Sky,” which is based in part on her experiences in the 1960s’ art world in Los Angeles.
Although the authors write in different genres and took different routes to publication, all three are dedicated to the craft and have some interesting stories to share about the writing life. The trio will also read brief passages from their work and field questions from the audience. Copies of their books will be available for purchase.

STRAUSS ON MUSIQUES ROSTER

FUNDRAISING DINNER AT TOWN
John and Helen Falcone from Falcone Vineyards are coming to Town Kitchen & Grill on Nov. 14 for an evening of tasting and celebration. Chef David has pulled out all of the stops in creating a fall-oriented wine-pairing menu for the evening. John and Helen are Napa veterans who moved to Santa Ynez years ago and Falcone’s vineyards are in the Paso region.
In light of current events, Town will be auctioning off some wines from its private cellars with 100% of the auction proceeds to go to the Napa Valley Community Foundation, a local organization with a great reputation in the Napa and Sonoma region.

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group will present Terri Hill’s, “Iceland and Greenland Adventure” on Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.
Hill is an amateur photographer and geology enthusiast. She has to travelled all over the world for work as a data security analyst for a small software company in Simi Valley.
Iceland is a geologist’s dream. It sits atop a hot spot (like Yellowstone) and straddles the Mid-Atlantic Rift. Greenland is beautiful, sparsely populated and rugged.

‘MIGRANT’ AT ADAMS SQUARE MINI PARK
The Adams Hill Neighborhood Association is hosting the art installation “Migrant” by Luke Elton Smith through Nov. 17.
 Luke Elton Smith is an installation artist and architect residing in Los Angeles. His work focuses on the creation of spatial effects that create multiple readings on various scales. He studied Architecture at Princeton University and is a registered Architect in the state of California.
 “Migrant” consists of approximately 3,700 scale human figures, suspended in a cloud-like grid. The piece was originally conceived in early 2016 as a response to the European Migrant Crisis, and is a visual representation of those who died while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea during 2015. The media’s portrayal of these individuals is typically presented as quantities or numbers, to understand the amount of lives lost. This installation seeks to create a volumetric representation of how many lives are approximated to have been lost in the pursuit of a better life.  The installation increases in relevance in 2017 as more countries around the world engage in their own migrant-related issues.  Viewers are also encouraged to visit the installation in the evening when it is lit and the scale figures glow.

LOCAL YOGA CLASS
Gentle/level one yoga classes continue on Friday mornings at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s of Mountains Church.  
This class will improve joint mobility, flexibility, muscle strength and balance and will include some restorative yoga poses to help the body heal its own aches and pains by engaging the parasympathetic system. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
 All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick up large donations. Call the library at (818) 352-4481 to schedule a pick-up.

TOPS OFFERS LOCAL MEETINGS
TOPS – Take Off Pounds Sensibly – is a self-accountability group meeting held every Monday at Center for Spiritual Living, 4845 Dunsmore Ave. (at Santa Carlotta) in La Crescenta. Weigh-in begins at 5:30 p.m. with a one-hour meeting starting at 6 p.m.
 A meeting is also held in Sunland every Thursday at New Hope Community Church, 10438 Oro Vista St. Weigh-in is at 6:30 p.m.; meeting at 7 p.m.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).
Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
