Red Carpet Movie Premiere. It will be tonight, Thursday, Oct. 27 starting at

PANEL DISCUSSION ON CULTURE OF DEATH
In keeping with the spirit of the Halloween season, Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse presents “Memento Mori: A Panel on the Culture of Death” with Paul Koudounaris, Pam Bacich and Richard Carradine tonight, Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. All three participants have written books about their areas of interest: art historian and photographer Koudounaris focuses on how human remains are as much a reminder of life, memento vitae, as of death, memento mori; photographer Bacich captures the beauty and customs of Day of the Dead in Mexico; and ghost researcher Carradine chronicles local ghost lore.
Coming from varying disciplines and perspectives, Koudounaris, Bacich and Carradine all have rich experiences and insights to share regarding their encounters with death and its rituals.

OKTOBERFEST EVENT HOSTED BY USC-VHH WOMEN’S COUNCIL

COMMUNITY FAIR
In an effort to raise awareness about domestic violence, YWCA Glendale will host the “Prevention Is Possible” Community Fair on Oct. 29. The month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence affects all ages, races, socioeconomic, educational, religious, and occupational segments of our society.
The family-friendly community fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 735 E. Lexington Drive, Glendale. Bring the whole family for food, games, community resources and a rummage sale. Proceeds from the sale will directly support the YWCA programs for women and children. This event is free and open to the community.

RIDING CLUB HOSTS HALLOWEEN FUNDRAISER
Shadow Hills Riding Club (SHRC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that offers certified therapeutic horsemanship to children and adults, is hosting a Halloween Festival Fundraiser Oct. 28-30.
The fundraiser will be honoring local veterans as well as first responders (police, firefighters, EMTs) by giving these local heroes and their families free entrance to all three days to the festival.
On opening night, Friday, Oct. 28, anyone who brings a can of food or a new toy will also receive free entry to the event. These items will be used for various SHRC holiday charitable giving events/programs in December.
SHRC is a P.A.T.H. International Premier Accredited Riding Center. Programs include therapeutic riding (for children & adults with disabilities), Saddles for Soldiers (for veterans from all branches suffering from PTSD and/or traumatic brain injury) and Saddles ‘N Serenity (for those in recovery and challenged with addiction to alcohol, drugs and eating disorders, an original program created written by SHRC executive program director Johnny Higginson).
SHRC is located at Shadow Hills Equestrian Center. SHRC offers therapeutic riding programs in which horses are used as a tool for physical therapy, emotional growth and learning for individuals with mental, physical, and/or emotional disabilities, and to carry on other charitable activities associated with this purpose.

LECTURES AT LANTERMAN HOUSE
The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation will host a lecture at the Lanterman House Visitor Center by Stuart Byles, author of the authoritative book on the history of wine making, “Los Angeles Wine.” Byles’ lecture will take place on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets to the lecture are $5 per person. The ticket includes a unique opportunity to taste the products of Old Oak Cellars in Pasadena, and some super-local, small-batch wine-makers, such as the Stonebarn Vineyard in La Crescenta, Lone Oak and Cherry Canyon in La Cañada. His lecture will focus on the rich history of wine-making in the Crescenta Cañada valleys and the Los Angeles area. The lecture will be followed by a book sale and signing.

KIDS’ (NOT TOO SCARY) HALLOWEEN HAUNTED HOUSE
The Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills is having its yearly Halloween Haunted House on Monday, Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is inviting the community to come for a fun experience and a safe place to bring the kids. Last year was a full house with over 700 visitors on Halloween night. The place was filled with ghouls, goblins, witches and many other characters. This is a perfect haunted house for younger children, ages 3-9, and the evening will include lots of fun activities including haunted house tour, gifts, plenty of candy and photos on the orange carpet.

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club presents Bruce Hale’s, “Turkey: The Grand Loop from Istanbul to Ankara” on Tuesday Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.
Bruce Hale, Sierra Club member and world traveler, will talk about his May 2016 visit to Turkey, a country between Europe and Asia. Over 2,500 miles for 17 days, the tour traveled from Istanbul to modern Ankara. Starting in Istanbul, the slide show will include Troy, Izmir, Ephesus, Pamukkale, Antalya, Cappadocia and Ankara. Each destination has its own history going back to ancient times. Roman ruins abound and some of the best preserved ruins can be found there.

GLENDALE COLLEGE PATRONS CLUB PLANS FUNDRAISER LUNCHEON
On Friday, Nov. 4 the Patrons Club of Glendale Community College/GC Foundation, Inc. will hold its annual fundraiser at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale starting at 11:30 a.m. The event will benefit deserving students at Glendale Community College with scholarships and grants-in-aid. Last year, the Patrons Club awarded more than $23,000 in scholarships and grants-in-aid. This year the Patrons Club will celebrate its 69th year of service to the college’s students.
The luncheon will honor Gael Davitt in appreciation for her years of support and generosity to the Patrons Club. The event will also feature a dance performance by students in the GCC Dance Dept. There will be many prizes, a drawing for $1,000 and a silent auction. A live auction will feature packages of four tickets and one parking pass for a Clippers game, a Lakers game and a Kings game.

TWO EXHIBITIONS AT BRAND LIBRARY
Brand Library & Art Center and Thinkspace Gallery present two concurrent exhibitions opening on Nov. 5. In a Dream (En un Sueño), presented in collaboration with Mexico’s Fifty24MX Gallery, will feature new works and a mural installation by Mexican artist and muralist Edgar Flores (SANER). Nexus, a group exhibition curated by Thinkspace, will feature pieces by 64 new contemporary artists alongside murals and installations by Bumblebeelovesyou, Cryptik, Drew Merritt, Kelly Vivanco, Lucien Shapiro and Yoskay Yamamoto.

THREE ROMANTIC MASTERS ON MUSIQUES ROSTER
The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on Nov. 6 and features three German Romantic masters: Robert Schumann, Richard Strauss and Xaver Scharwenka.

PASADENA HERITAGE CRAFTSMAN WEEKEND
In its 25th year, Pasadena Heritage will present the Annual Craftsman Weekend on Nov. 11-13. The Weekend will mark a quarter century of honoring the Craftsman movement, featuring house tours of notable Craftsman properties, along with bus and walking tours of the surrounding neighborhoods. Other events scheduled include a Show and Sale with over 50 exhibitors of antique and contemporary furniture and decorative arts, a silent auction, workshops and presentations. In recognition of its 25th year hosting the event, Pasadena Heritage will be offering exclusive receptions at historic locations throughout the weekend.
The City of Pasadena is home to some of the most notable examples of the Craftsman Movement on the West Coast. Also known as the American Arts and Crafts Movement, the architectural style emerged in the early 1900s and is noted for its emphasis of ceramics, art and other features developed by skilled craftsmen. Tracing its roots to England, Craftsmen design has nevertheless developed a unique and internationally lauded aesthetic in Pasadena, with the work of architects Charles and Henry Greene, tile maker Ernest Batchelder, and writer/photographer Helen Lukens Gaut, among others.

Bolton Hall Museum and Little Landers Historical Society’s next Second Saturday program is on Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. and is a lesson in how to find items in the Los Angeles city government records.
The speaker for this program is Los Angeles City Archivist Michael Holland. Holland will let attendees know what kind of records are available to the general public and will share some stories about the preserved history of the City of Los Angeles.

YULE BALL HELD AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
On Friday, Nov. 18, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., all are invited to attend a Yule Ball at Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse. Enjoy an evening of music, dancing and festivities held to usher in the holiday season and coinciding with the release of J.K. Rowling’s screenplay (published by Scholastic) for the movie “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which opens in theaters that evening.

CALTECH SYMPHONY PRESENTS ITS FALL CONCERT
The Caltech Symphony, under the direction of Allen Robert Gross, presents the opening concert of its 2016-17 season on Sunday, Nov. 20 at Caltech’s Ramo Auditorium. The concert begins at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free and no tickets are required.
The program consists of Wagner’s majestic “Prelude to Die Meistersinger,” Samuel Barber’s nostalgic “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” and Dvořák’s sunny and melodious “Symphony No. 8.” Soprano soloist in the Barber is Elissa Johnston.

Hailed by Musical America for “her voice pure and ethereal, her expression embracing and heartfelt,” soprano Johnston is a Southern California favorite and sought-after singer. Some of her local engagements include the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Jacaranda Music, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.
The Caltech Symphony is a college-community orchestra composed of students from Caltech, Jet Propulsion Laboratory staff, and players from the surrounding community. Director Gross begins his 33rd year of conducting at Caltech.

LOCAL YOGA CLASS

DBSA OFFERS SUPPORT GROUP
Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has a support group meeting every Tuesday at Vallejo Drive Adventist Church in Glendale every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. DBSA provides hope, help, and support through peer-based, recovery oriented empowering services, and resources when people need them and how they need to receive them.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick up large donations. Call the library at (818) 352-4481 to schedule a pick-up.

T.O.P.S. – Take Off Pounds Sensibly – is a self-accountability group meeting held every Monday. Weigh in is from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).
Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
