The legendary Arturo Sandoval brings his big band to the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale for a one night only performance to Save The Music 2. The performance will take place Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. at the Alex Theatre. Ticket prices range from $25 to $150 ($10 for students with ID) and are available at the Alex Theatre, The Americana at Brand Grand Lobby Concierge Desk or the Glendale Community College Theatre box office. Tickets may also be purchased 24/7 online at www.alextheatre.org.
Sandoval’s big band includes some of L.A.’s most accomplished musicians, all masters of the jazz, Latin-infused, Afro-Cuban rhythms Sandoval is known for. The big band, along with a few of Sandoval’s special friends, will also perform with the ASI All Star Youth Jazz Band made up of students from the Glendale Unified School District.
In addition to being a benefit concert for ASI, Glendale Arts and the Glendale Education Foundation, the performance marks the second year of the Arturo Sandoval Institute. Founded in 2012, ASI was born from Sandoval’s belief that all kids should have an opportunity to learn and appreciate music, regardless of their financial abilities. In addition to in-school master classes, which Sandoval has already begun, he hopes to be able to offer scholarships, instruments and private tutoring.
A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. The multi-Grammy and Billboard winner has played with such artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Bill Conti, and Stan Getz as well as vocalists Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys, amongst others.
Running time for this performance is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, and is suitable for all ages.
Alex Theatre is located at 216 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale.
