The Alex Film Society presents “The Adventures of Robin Hood” (1938)
starring Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland on Thursday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m.
After 80 years, “The Adventures of Robin Hood” is still widely regarded as one of the all-time great action adventure epics. And it’s a TCM fan favorite!
In the well-known story, a dashing 12th century English nobleman (Robin Hood) ends up on the wrong side of the law and flees to live with his band of merry men in Sherwood Forest where they begin a crusade of their own – stealing from the rich, giving to the poor. The movie is a masterpiece of craftsmanship nominated for best Oscars for art direction, editing and original score – winning all three. But best of all, Warner Bros. found the ideal actor to play the title role – a rising young star already on their lot – 28-year-old Errol Flynn.
TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz said, “Flynn was Robin Hood. Great athlete and swordsman (check!), handsome (check!), overflowing with confidence (check, check!!).”
Playing Maid Marian, the talented Olivia de Havilland was a perfect match to Flynn’s Robin Hood and marked the perfect pair’s third film together. The two thespians co-starred in a total of eight films making them one of film’s most popular screen duos. Top-flight co-stars feature Claude Rains as conniving and power-hungry Prince John, Basil Rathbone as the merciless Sir Guy of Gisbourne, Eugene Paulette as Friar Tuck and Alan Hale Sr. as Little John. Special on-stage guest is Rory Flynn, photographer, author and daughter of Errol Flynn.
The festivities on March 8 kick off with “Rabbit Hood,” a 1949 Warner Bros. cartoon starring Bugs Bunny and directed by Chuck Jones. Voices are Mel Blanc and a surprise guest (hint: initials are EF) and bloopers from the Warner Bros. vault. Watch Bogie, Cagney, Raft, Bette Davis, John Garfield and more giggle and cuss on the set of your favorite Warner Bros. classics from 1938. Plus more special guests: relatives of the movie’s cast and crew! And terrific Robin Hood raffle prizes.
