Then & Now | Le Mesnager Barn

Le Mesnager Barn then

THEN »This is a view in the 1970s looking east at the Le Mesnager Barn in what is now Deukmejian Park. At that time it was no longer owned by the Le Mesnager family but was owned by Intervalley Ranch, a development company that planned to build hundreds of homes in Dunsmore Canyon. They leased the barn to an outfit that operated a stable from the barn. The famed Blue Shadows mounted drill team was based there. Here we see corrals to the right, and a welcome banner above during an open house.

Le Mesnager Barn now

NOW »Thankfully Glendale considered Dunsmore Canyon unsafe to build in due to fire and flood danger (apparently they were correct!), and prevented the builder from moving forward. This resulted in a series of lawsuits culminating in the city buying the land in the ‘80s for a park. Here’s the same view looking east at the Le Mesnager barn last Sunday when the Glendale Park Department invited visitors to view fire damage and recovery efforts on a guided hike from the barn.
