Girl Scouts Prepare Dinner for Fire Station 19

By Mary O’KEEFE

As part of working toward their Bronze Award, Girl Scout from Troop 527-1 spent several meetings planning a meal for Los Angeles County firefighters at Station 19.

Last year the girls collected toys for the LACoFD Spark of Love and toured Station 19.  When the girls began thinking about their Bronze Award they came up with several ideas that would help the community. They voted on supporting and feeding the firefighters as a way of thanking them for keeping their community safe. The Troop is based out of Mountain Avenue Elementary School that was evacuated during the Station Fire and floods.

“They helped us during the fire,” said Gemma Tuna, a sixth grader and Troop member.

The girls used math skills when budgeting the meal as well as measuring the ingredients. Each girl had to use her leadership and team building skills to work together in the preparation of the
meal.

Finally, after budgeting and shopping, the girls spent an afternoon preparing a meal of lasagna, garlic bread and salad. They delivered it to Station 19 on Friday night.

“This is the first time anything like this has happened,” said the station’s captain.
