The line was long as pizza lovers lined up at the La Cañada Blaze Pizza on Pi day. On March 14 customers could buy an 11-inch pizza for $13.99 and get a second one for just $3.14. Despite the drizzle, customers were smiling as they left juggling their two boxes of “pi.”
The annual celebration is observed on March 14 since 3, 1 and 4 are the first three significant figures of pi, the mathematical constant. Pi Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1988.
Glendale resident and Blaze owner Sheela Patel was busy handling the after-school crowd letting a few people into the restaurant at a time. The La Cañada Blaze celebrated its first Pi Day in 2014. According to Patel, each year the line of customer grows larger.

La Crescenta resident Richard Ori took his daughters for pizza. Amelia, 2, picked at her slice. Big sister Cassie, 6, dove right in. She made sure she had plenty of black olives and ham on her pizza.
Altadena resident and pizza maker David Vega said, “[Pi Day] keeps me busy. I like to see different faces.”
