CVIM Holds Its Spring Concert

By Lucian KUGLER

The Crescenta Valley High School Visual and Performing Arts Dept., also known as the CV music program, held its highly anticipated spring concert on March 29 and it proved to be a night to remember. The concert featured an impressive lineup of musical groups, including the jazz band, jazz combo, string orchestra, wind ensemble, symphony orchestra and concert band, all of which were conducted by band director Mathew Schick, who has been directing the CV jazz band since 2001.

Despite the concert being rescheduled due to the students’ performance trip to Carnegie Hall, the CV music program performance did not disappoint. The change in schedule did not dampen the enthusiasm of the students or the audience, which was treated to stunning performances. The groups had previously earned at least one “superior” grade in music festivals leading up to the concert, setting the bar high for the members’ spring concert.

From the soulful rendition of “My Funny Valentine” to the upbeat “88 Basie Street,” every song was nothing short of phenomenal. The jazz band and jazz combo were particularly impressive with their student-led approach showcasing the immense talent and musical prowess of the students.

The string orchestra, wind ensemble, symphony orchestra, and concert band were no less impressive with each group showcasing their unique strengths and musical abilities. The performance of “Tsunami” by the wind ensemble was particularly noteworthy, with its sweeping crescendos and intricate melodies leaving the audience in awe.

It was also worth mentioning that the CV music program had performed at Carnegie Hall just a few weeks prior to the spring concert, an accomplishment that demonstrated the bands’ immense talent and dedication to their craft. The Crescenta Valley High School Visual and Performing Arts Dept.’s spring concert further cemented the CV music program’s reputation for excellence.
