One of Our Lady of Lourde’s most highly anticipated events of the year hit the stage and wowed the crowds when the Performing Arts Dept. performed “Mulan Jr.” This year’s performance of one of Disney’s most loved movies was a huge success with incredible set design, costuming, makeup, sound, lighting and, of course, acting.
Eighth grader Andrea Narciso expertly played Mulan, the girl who fought in the Chinese Army. Mushu the Dragon was playfully embodied by eighth grade student Lucy Bastida and warrior Captain Shang was played by a Amanda Lewin. Many other talented actors were also found on stage.
All the characters were entertaining, drawing smiles, applause and huge laughs from the audience. The stage was magically transformed under the direction of Alexandra DeFrancia, OLL’s fifth grade teacher, into a mountainous landscape complete with an avalanche.
“The students learn new skills that are useful in theater as well as in life,” said DeFrancia. “They must show cooperation and courtesy with peers and adults as they work toward a common goal. So, all at once, our students are developing critical thinking, physical, and interpersonal skills in ways that would not be possible in a classroom setting.”
The costumes and makeup were professional as was the intermission room, which was decorated like a pagoda. Hanging lamps, a giant Mushu Dragon and fun artwork by the kids were on display and even the desserts had a Chinese theme.
The help of parents, teachers, staff, alumni and others was essential to the success of the production. Everyone worked countless hours to make the production go smoothly.
“My favorite part of the entire months-long production is seeing the end result – the performance,” said DeFrancia. “Seeing the students shine on stage and behind the scenes after months of preparation makes it clear to me that the effort was worthwhile. And then seeing the proud smiles on everyone’s faces makes me want to start planning the next one as soon as we wrap up production.”
