Lions, tigers, and laser tag are what participants find after entering the doors of The Zone located on Glendale Avenue.
With its rooms decorated with nets and trees, coming into The Zone has a unique and inviting atmosphere that is appealing to both kids and adults.
“We first opened our doors in July of 2008,” said Violet Guiragos, owner of The Zone laser tag arena. “We started this laser tag business because Glendale doesn’t have a family entertainment center.”
Now in the midst of summer, The Zone’s unique service as a laser tag facility gives people of all ages an opportunity to go out and be active.
“It’s a great place for kids to meet new friends, interact with other friends, and socialize with other [people],” explained Guiragos.
Each game of laser tag is approximately 15 minutes long. A player is equipped with a vest containing sensors and a laser gun. Each player is assigned a jungle name such as Hippo,
Monkey, or Crocodile. When the game is over, players can run
out to a screen where they can view their individual and team scores.
“It’s an active game, it’s very engaging,” said Guiragos.
The arena has two levels with walls, mirrors, ramps, and hiding places, all of which can be used to deceive competitors. Smoke and colorful laser lights are turned on as players run around, constantly dodging and shooting. The Zone’s program uses a variety of laser tag games and challenges.
“The Zone is a lot of fun for any age and you get to meet a lot of new people that you get to play with,” said 13-year-old Montrose resident Ruaidhri Gray, a frequent laser tag player.
After a round of laser tag, thirsty and hungry players can get refueled at the Zone’s snack bar that offers a full menu of snacks, food and beverages.
“We have a pizza kitchen, coffee bar, and smoothie drinks,” said Guiragos. The menu includes salads, sandwiches, chicken strips, appetizers and sodas.
Laser tag is a game that has a broad appeal. “We do lots of birthday parties on the weekends. We also do fundraising events for schools and non-profit organizations and we do corporate events,” said Guiragos. The facility provides a private room that can accommodate these events.
For fundraising gatherings, 50% of laser tag sales (pre-sale tickets) are given to the non profit organization.
