YOUTH Notes

Youth & Government at the Y
Youth & Government, a national Y program for high school students, is holding a new member night on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at Sparr Hieghts Community Center from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Youth & Government enables young people to prepare for moral and political leadership through training in the theory and practice of developing public policy. Working in collaboration with educators, business leaders and local governments, the Youth & Government program creates better learning environments that close the academic achievement gap between children.

Youth & Government provides students with practical experience in the study of state government. Participants will study relevant issues, draft legislation, learn how to present their legislation in a committee and debate it on the floor of the House or Senate. There is also a judicial program for print and video journalists, legislative lobbyists and legislative analysts.

Students will participate in training and election trips to Camp Roberts (Paso Robles, Calif.) in November and January to prepare for the highlight of the program: a trip to the state capital in February. In Sacramento, our delegations will join other Y&G groups in California and preside over all aspects of the state government with access to:

· The entire capital and supreme court chambers, including the senate and assembly floors

· All governmental offices and the governor’s personal suite

· All advocate and trial court chambers
