New Season of Programs at Y

Y-Tribes, Guides and Princesses
The Crescenta-Cañada and Verdugo Hills Family YMCAs are offering the Y-Tribes program which will provide opportunities for dads and their kids to build companionship, understanding and mutual respect for one another. The father and child will also strengthen relationships, create life long memories and meet new friends. New member night is tonight, Thursday, Sept. 22 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Y facility.
The Y-Tribes program is open to dads and their kids (kindergarten to fourth grade). Monthly meetings include tribe activities, crafts, games and projects. There are also several trips and events throughout the year including pumpkin carve, roller skate night, snow camp, Friday night flick with In-N-Out, pancake breakfast, campout and much more.

Youth & Government

Youth & Government weekly meetings start on Wednesday, Sept. 28 and run through February.
The Youth & Government program is one of many teen leadership programs at the Y that strives to focus on youth development and social responsibility. Hundreds of local teens have benefited from this program in the past and have excelled in the study of government.
Youth & Government provides students with practical experience in the study of state government. Participants study issues, draft legislation, and learn how to present their legislation in a committee, and debate it on the floor of the House or Senate. Youth & Government also includes a judicial program and special programs for pages, print and video journalists, legislative lobbyists and legislative analysts.
The highlight of the program is a trip to Sacramento in February where the students will preside over all aspects of the state government and have access to the entire Capitol and Supreme Court Chambers including the Senate and Assembly floors, all governmental offices and the governor’s personal suite, and all advocate and trial court chambers.
Youth & Government is a valuable program for all teens and is supported by state and local officials.

PILOTs
The YMCA hosts a community service based program for teens in the area.     PILOTs – Progressive Individual Leadership of Teens – is designed to help build leadership skills among the community’s teens and help them discover more about themselves and others around them. PILOTs was created to offer opportunities for teens to serve their community, city and county.
The program begins on Sept. 29 and weekly meetings are on Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Some projects that are planned include preparing lunches for the homeless, organizing canned food drives, creating friendships with local seniors, Christmas gift adoptions and volunteering at local events.
