Mountain Avenue Elementary School hosted a back-to-school picnic and outdoor movie on its upper field in the evening on Friday, Sept. 6. Several hundred students and their families came to enjoy a barbecue dinner of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks. There were also popcorn and candy available during the movie “Toy Story” that was shown on an outdoor movie screen.

The event was a fun way for families and students to get to know each other at the start of the new year as well as supporting the sixth grade class in its fundraising efforts to attend a Washington, D.C. field trip at the end of the year.

“Our annual back to school picnic is special because it brings our Mountain Avenue ‘bear’ family together. We are lucky that we have so many volunteers to help put on this event,” said Mountain Avenue principal Jaclyn Scott.

To start the movie, the principal asked the crowd to shout out, “Go, Bears!” since the bear is the school’s mascot and its motto of “B.E.A.R.S.” stands for “Be kind, Encourage others, Accept responsibility, Respect others, and be Safe.”
