Rosemont Middle School Builders Club, an affiliate of Kiwanis International, hosted a baby duck race on Thursday as a precursor to the Kiwanis Incredible Duck Splash that was held on Saturday at Verdugo Park. Builders Club is a student-led organization that provides members with service opportunities to volunteer, fundraise and donate.
Rosemont students who adopted a ducky on campus were entered in both races, the Kiwanis Incredible Duck Splash and the Rosemont Duck Race.
According to Builders Club advisor Jamie Arrow, “We thought students needed to see a duck race in action to raise awareness, encourage more participation, increase our sales, and ultimately, raise greater proceeds for all beneficiaries. Our students were very enticed by the adorable rubber duckies all around campus. We purchased a variety of duckies, so students wanted to collect different ones.” About 250 ducks were sold for the on-campus race.
Twelve prizes ranging from VANS sunglasses to Hello Kitty accessories were awarded at Thursday’s event. Billy’s Boardshop in Montrose was a major sponsor.
Arrow estimates that the Builders Club raised over $1,200.
“Having our own duck race at school truly heightened student interest,” she said.
