With hundreds of children, members of the board of education, Superintendent Winfred Roberson and distinguished guests in attendance, Lincoln Elementary School held an official ribbon cutting for its new building and turf field.
After the pledge of allegiance, led by sixth grade student council member Adelaide Haack, members of the school board addressed the students and special guests.
GUSD board member Jennifer Freemon asked for thumbs up or thumbs down from the school children to indicate their approval of the new turf field and classrooms.
“Whew! Looks like we made the right decision,” Freemon said after seeing the sea of upward thumbs. “This is a symbol of how much the community cares about you guys.”
The construction, which took over two years to complete, was funded by Measure S funds that were approved by voters in 2011.
Superintendent Roberson engaged the students by asking them for five seconds of screaming enthusiasm to show their approval of the new field and buildings – which they obliged – before settling in for his comments.
“This ribbon cutting culminates years of planning,” Roberson told the crowd, adding that the bond approval by voters made the project possible.
The 10,000 square-foot building maintains the architectural integrity of the rest of the elementary school and houses six classrooms that include learning walls with 80-inch TV monitors.
The morning event was highlighted with a student performance of the school song, “Onward Lincoln, Lincoln Lions.”
