Local Lions Club Student Speakers Contest Open for Entries

The Crescenta-Cañada Lions Club is currently seeking submissions for its Annual Speakers Contest, sponsored by the California Lions Clubs. The topic for the 2018-19 contest, now in its 82nd year, is “Freedom of the Press: What Does It Mean?”

Students interested in entering the contest shall prepare a talk/speech on the topic as close as to, but not more than, 10 minutes and no less than five minutes delivery time.

The Crescenta-Cañada Lions will hold its contest for students from area high schools, including Crescenta Valley, La Cañada and Clark Magnet, on the afternoon of Saturday, Jan. 12. Confirmed participants will receive additional information and details. The winner, who will receive a $100 award, will then move on to the zone ($150 award) contest. Each level winner will then move on to subsequent contests: region ($250 award), district (15 winners – $4,500 scholarship), area (four winners – $6,500 scholarship) and a final state (one $10,000 scholarship) contest.

Interested participants will need to notify Connie Janson of the Crescenta-Cañada Lions Club by Friday, Jan. 4 of their intent to participate in the Speaker’s Contest. Additionally, those who have questions or need additional information can contact Janson at (818) 730-8243 or via email at 5starshopper@att.net.

The Crescenta-Cañada Lions Club has been serving the Crescenta Valley community since 1947 with such activities as its free vision screening clinics, Kases for Kids backpack program for foster children, scholarship program for high school students and student speakers contest. In the coming months, the Lions Club plans to increase it service to the community as it grows its membership. In 2016, this Lions Club sponsored its first student LEO Club at CV High School, which boasts a membership of more than 70 students.
