After 39 years of dedicated service, Kevin Ryan from the Malibu team retired. Along with his work at Malibu Search And Rescue, he was on the SAR staff as the technology director. Replacing him as SAR technology director is Steve Goldsworthy.
Along with being a recent SAR Person of the Year, Goldsworthy’s commitment and dedication to assisting all the SAR teams with technology is widely recognized. He has made himself available to all at all times of the day or night. Among his accomplishments, Goldsworthy pioneered the LASD SAR team’s use of GPS tagging on photos; discovered a rescue app where SAR members can obtain the GPS location of subjects (if they are in cellphone range); assisted all other SAR teams 24/7 with the use of this technology;
instructed ESD members with the use of this technology; shared this knowledge with surrounding counties’ SAR teams; assisted Santa Clarita Station by tracking a homicide suspect using cellphone technology.
This appointment was approved though the chain of command at Reserve Forces Detail, including the acting chief of Special Operations Division Jack Ewell.
“Everyone appreciates Steve’s skill sets and are glad that LASD SAR will remain on the forefront of using technology to locate and rescue our future victims,” stated Mike Leum, assistant director, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept., Special Operations Division – Reserve Forces Detail.
