Reacquainting Myself with the Year’s Stories

Mary O’Keefe and I finally finished preparing a recap of the 2019 year in news. Going through each of the newspapers jarred my memory of how busy the year was. Whether it was telling the story of the seniors stranded by non-working elevators at Honolulu Manor Senior Apartments or sharing the swift reaction by a Rosemont student to a child destined to be hit by a speeding vehicle, the year was full of interesting, inspiring, maddening and always community-centered information.

Brandon Hensley, our sports editor, is doing a similar job with sports. He’ll be sharing the stories of local athletes giving their all and how their efforts played out in the sports arenas.

Leisure editor Charly Shelton will be doing the same with travel and leisure. If you’ve been pondering interesting day trips or something more substantial, make sure you look over his recap; you might get some great ideas. And, of course, he’ll transport you to local theme parks with his reviews of events they’ve hosted over the last year.

Susan James has written movie reviews that have been well received over the last year and took readers to the costume geniuses and their work found at Fashion Institute and Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles.

As we gear up for the new decade – what will we clearly see in 2020? – perhaps looking at the past year will offer some insights.

For those who want to further support the CV Weekly, may I suggest subscribing? We would love to deliver the Crescenta Valley happenings to your doorstep every Thursday morning. In addition to being the first to learn what’s going on around town, you’ll be supporting this privately-owned newspaper, its writers and photographers and those who get up way earlier than I ever want to who make sure to throw it in our neighbors’ driveways every week. The subscription form should be on page 4 but you can always call the office and speak to Rachelle – (818) 248-2740.

Speaking of reacquainting myself, I am doing that this week in North Carolina where two of our sons celebrated Christmas. Steve and I traveled there to be with our son Danny, his wife Tricia, her mom Susan, our son Matthew and our former neighbor Sean, his girlfriend Bree and his friend Jonathan. Sean is hosting our get together and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Just being able to relax and catch up in person on all that our boys have been up to is so much better than grabbing a phone conversation or checking social media. Being together gives us the chance to get into deeper conversation, sometimes not even planning on delving into certain topics; it’s just where the conversation goes.

And as we approach the New Year, I want to take a minute to thank my family, and friends who are like family, that have made this past year memorable. As I grow older I realize how important these people are in my life and am forever thankful.

Happy New Year and please be careful.
