Body Identified as Missing Man

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office has confirmed  the body found by searchers today near Scholl Canyon was that of missing Rancho Palos Verdes man Yoshiya Watanabe, according to Lt. Joe Bale, LA Coroner’s office.

Members of the Glendale police department and Los Angeles Search and Rescue units discovered the body of a man in his 50s near a vehicle reportedly belonging to Watanabe who was last seen at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Watanabe was a 57-year-old man who suffered from seizures, hypertension and impaired memory. He was reported missing on Thursday, Feb. 3. His vehicle was found near the 1600 block of Glenoaks Drive in Glendale on Sunday. The drive dead ends not far from Scholl Canyon near the dump area.

“The body was found a short distance from the vehicle,” said Sgt. Tom Lorenz, Glendale police spokesman.

Members of the Montrose Search and Rescue Team out of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Crescenta Valley Station were among the units called on Monday to assist in the search.

Watanabe’s body was found about 12 p.m. on Monday. Glendale police are handling the investigation. L.A. Coroner’s office has not yet determined cause of death.
