La Cañada Flintridge residents voted on Tuesday to approve the education parcel tax. Out of 13,005 eligible voters, a total of 4,993 votes were tallied resulting in 68.16% approval.
Measure LC, parcel tax, will cost property owners $450 annually and will support the La Cañada Unified School District. In 2009, 75% of La Cañada Flintridge residents who are within the LCUSD boundaries approved a similar measure that required residents to pay $150 annually. That measure was set to expire later this year.
A Citizens Oversight Committee will monitor the funds that will be folded into the LCUSD budget. According to the measure, the funds will remain local and are restricted from being spent on district administrators’ salaries and benefits.
Residents in the western section of La Cañada known as the Sagebrush area, bordered by Ocean View Boulevard and Rosebank Avenue, will not be affected by the parcel tax. Residents within those boundaries attend Glendale Unified School District.
