Allies!
How do we move forward? It’s not rocket science. We need to worry less about doing what is most important, and more about doing whatever we can. And remember, the end doesn’t justify the means; the means are the ends.
At my age, in this still hierarchical time, people often ask me if I’m “passing the torch.” I explain that I’m keeping my torch, thank you very much – and I’m using it to light the torches of others.
Because only if each of us has a torch will there be enough light. ~ Gloria Steinem at 80
As you may know, our grant requires participation by representatives from 12 “sectors” in society. One important group is youth. It has been a year in the making but, at last, we have our own youth group. Any high school student who thinks this issue is important is encouraged to participate.
Last Thursday, our Youth Alliance hosted a bowling party at Montrose Bowl, open to and attended by over 60 high school students from both Clark and CV high schools. Bowling is a fun ice breaker. It was a joyful night! Well done, members of our Youth Alliance and adult mentors! Well done!
Last year, we promoted the “40 Developmental Assets” heavily, i.e. 40 common characteristics and practices found in successful children. Our Youth Alliance is an asset. Participation gives kids a positive way to help the community, to feel a part of something larger than her/himself, and to be with non-parental adults who care about them.
Former CVHS principal Linda Evans says we need to have as many baskets as possible for our young people – from the “not putting all eggs into one” philosophy, I guess. Add the Youth Alliance to Prom Plus, Fire House, CVTC’s Youth Council, Homenetmen, Scouts, Explorers, teams, clubs, ASB, church groups, and Lunch Bunch to name many. By giving kids more assets, or buckets, or torches, there will be light in Crescenta Valley.
P.S. I was wrong about Colorado tax haul. $98 million is projected by year’s end, not first month. Thanks to my big brother Doug for setting me right.
