Skate Park Community Meeting

By Jason KUROSU

Local skateboarders and Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation officials have been working together for the better part of two years to bring a skate park to La Crescenta. With the two nearest such parks in La Cañada and Verdugo Park, teens from the local Fire House formed the CV Skate Park Committee in order to establish a skate park in the area, to be located in Crescenta Valley Park.

The first of three public outreach meetings regarding the skate park will take place on Thursday, March 21 at the La Crescenta Public Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta at 7 p.m.

“It’s an opportunity to give the public a chance to speak out, whether they’re for or against the park,” said CV Skate Park Committee President Cooper Iven.

Iven and the committee have worked with county officials on the design and planning of the park in the hopes of making a park designed by skaters, for skaters.

Jim Smith, chief of the Parks and Rec. Development Division, said the skate park is in the pre-planning phase.

“We have a proposal coming in from a landscape architectural consultant,” said Smith, who will meet with the architects soon.

Smith and other Parks and Recreation Dept. personnel also worked on the recently opened CV Dog Park.

“We should have everything on board for the meeting,” said Smith.

The other two outreach meetings have not yet been scheduled.
