LA County Updates Its Numbers

For the third consecutive day Los Angeles County Public Health reported its highest numbers of cases of death due to COVID-19.

On April 14, the number of new deaths was 40; on April 15 it was 42; and today, April 16, the number of new deaths increased to 55. This brings the total number of deaths in LA County to 455 and the mortality rate to 4.2%.

“The increase this week on the number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 is distressing and a stark reminder of the devastation caused by COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, director of Public Health. “Public Health is planning for our County’s eventual recovery and preparing for a time when we can ease the Health Officer Orders. Our goal is to get people back to work by gradually relaxing restrictions in a measured and disciplined way to avoid experiencing a resurgence of cases that overwhelms our healthcare system and threatens our collective well-being. Many routines will still be different, and practicing physical distancing, wearing face coverings and keeping our hands clean will be very important until we have a vaccine.”

As of April 16 the new number of positive cases of COVID-19 total 10,854; this includes 379 in Long Beach and 184 in Pasadena – both cities have their own public health departments. In Glendale the number of positive cases is 288, in La Cañada Flintridge there are 24 cases, Eagle Rock has 48 reported cases, Sunland has 36 and Tujunga has 21. In the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County – Angeles National Forest has reported one to four cases and La Crescenta/Montrose has 11 cases reported.

As of April 15 institutional settings, including nursing homes and assisted living facilities, that have reported at least one positive case of COVID-19 include (in the Glendale/ Montrose area) Montrose Healthcare Center, Glenhaven Healthcare, Glendale Post Acute Care Center, Glendale Healthcare Center and Glenoaks Convalescent Hospital; in Burbank the Ambitions CA Inc./Verdugo 2 and Alameda Care Center, and in Eagle Rock the Ararat Convalescent Hospital.
