Police, sheriff, SWAT and fire vehicles filled Briggs Avenue on Wednesday after the Los Angeles Police Dept. attempted to serve a warrant to a resident in a home in the 2400 block of Harmony Place.
“Los Angeles Police Dept. detectives assigned to the fugitive warrant section were in the 2400 block of Harmony Place. They were there to serve an arrest warrant for an individual,” said Det. Meghan Aguilar, LAPD spokeswoman.
The man refused to come out of the home.
“[He] made threats against the detectives who were at the scene,” she said. “He threatened to kill them.”
It was then detectives called the Special Weapons And Tactics officers to the scene.
Aguilar said detectives felt the threats were valid “due to the suspect’s history.” She did not go into the man’s history but did say he had a criminal past. The detectives attempted to communicate with the man, but at some point those communications stalled. Aguilar said she wasn’t certain how much negotiation or communication occurred between SWAT and the man.
LAPD deployed “hot gas” into the home; however there was still no response from the man.
“Eventually [officers] had to go inside the home. There they discovered the suspect unresponsive. They requested medical personnel who came in and determined the suspect had died at the scene,” Aguilar said. “It does appear to be a self-inflicted injury.”
There was no officer involved shooting and, Aguilar said, no one heard any gunfire. There was no one else in the home at the time. The man was the resident of the home.
As of press time, LAPD is not releasing any information concerning the arrest warrant or the name of the man “pending notification of the family.” As of press time on Wednesday, the LA County Coroner’s Office had not released any information regarding cause of death.
