Busy Season Not Quite Over
Mary O’Keefe, who not only works with me at the CV Weekly but is also vice president of Prom Plus in addition to overseeing The Firehouse Youth Center, and I were talking this week about how the expected slowdown in activities hasn’t yet happened. Typically we look to Prom Plus as the topper to a busy season following Special Olympics, Relay for Life, Taste of Montrose, etc. Memorial Day weekend was packed (I hope our coverage does it all justice) and leads up to Life Rolls On on Saturday, June 2.
LRO is an organization “dedicated to improving the quality of life for young people affected by spinal cord injury through adaptive surfing and skating.” Several Crescenta Valley folks volunteer for LRO, including my husband Steve and my son Matthew and, in the past, my son Danny and, for the first time this year, my son Andy. They are among a massive team of people who take people who have been affected by spinal cord injury out to surf. I’ve been to LRO – not as an in-water volunteer but a beach monitor – and I can testify that it is a fantastic and moving event.
Then next Saturday, June 9, is a bingo game at USC-VHH that benefits the 4th of July CV Fireworks show. This display has grown to be a staple in our community and it is organized completely by volunteers. But it is an expensive undertaking, costing thousands of dollars, and the June 9 bingo game is one of few fundraising events. And what better way to raise money for a great event than having a great event? That is what the June 9 bingo game is all about. In addition to the possibility of winning cash prizes, there will be food for purchase, opportunity drawings and more. Tickets are just $20. Call the CV Chamber office for more info at (818) 248-4957.
On June 16 we will mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War Memorial with a ceremony at Ocean View and Honolulu. I’ve been on the planning committee and am proud of the plans that have been made.
So with a June that’s shaping up to be pretty busy, maybe I can look to a quieter July…
