Every New Beginning
Last night were the graduation ceremonies at Clark and Crescenta Valley high schools and the promotion of eighth grade students at Rosemont Middle School. Our youngest son graduated from CVHS in 2011, but I still remember the melancholy I felt as I watched him cross the stage to accept his diploma. But, as the song says, every new beginning comes from another beginning’s end. Our son Danny is now in the Air Force.
After reading today’s cover story about the graduations taking place around town, I am amazed at the number of community service hours these graduates have given. Thousands of hours have benefitted so many local organizations. At the ceremonies, they were recognized for the contributions, which I think is important. They should know that their efforts were appreciated.
On Monday night I had the opportunity to congratulate another person who gives – repeatedly – of herself and her talents to make a huge difference to our community.
Mary O’Keefe was awarded the Burtis E. Taylor Community Education Award by the Glendale Unified School District board of education. Mary is definitely not one who likes to be recognized for the work she does, and even if it’s not important to her, it’s important to others. It demonstrates what one person can do, how much of an effect their actions can have on their community. Mary’s award was in appreciation for her “extraordinary support of Glendale schools that has contributed significantly to maintaining the highest standards of excellence.” I was proud to be among her family members who came out to support her and thank the board for recognizing her. (To see a photo of Mary receiving the award, go online to cvweekly.com/NEWS and click on From the Desk of the Publisher.)
Also at the meeting was the recognition of the CVHS ComedySportz team for winning the 2018 Improv Madness championship. I hope you take a minute and read my recap of their last performance for this season. It’s in the Youth Section.
There are other volunteers who work hard to make our community the awesome place it is. I’m specifically highlighting the Crescenta Valley Fireworks Assn.
This group is in the throes of planning the Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza. Yes, this wonderful fireworks display that is enjoyed by thousands in the Crescenta Valley is organized entirely by volunteers. This year the coffers are light, so the Association is holding a bingo game on Saturday night at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital. Tickets are $20 for six cards, equaling 60 chances to win $100 plus there are raffle and bonus games. Tickets are available at the CV Chamber of Commerce office and the offices of CV Weekly.
To further support the fireworks association, consider making a financial donation. Envelopes will be in the June 7, June 14 and June 21 issues of the CV Weekly. These envelopes can be a treasure trove for the CV Fireworks Association and funds are needed.
We’re lucky to live where we do and just as lucky when opportunities arise to show our appreciation.
