A 14-year-old Sunland girl was transported to the hospital with serious injuries on Tuesday after the vehicle she was driving backed into a basin near a church’s parking lot.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, at 9:10 p.m. a church function was in progress at the Sunland Neighborhood Evangelical Church in the 10000 block of Oro Vista Avenue in Sunland.

The 14-year-old girl along with an 18-year-old girl entered a parked car. The younger of the two got into the driver’s side, the other girl got into the passenger seat. The 14-year-old girl started the engine and began to back up.

For an unknown reason, the car backed through the parking lot and through a chain link fence into the Haines Channel Drain Basin where it came to a rest at the bottom.

The girl was transported to Holy Cross Hospital and is listed in grave condition.
