Time Flies By

It’s hard to believe that July is just days away. I know I sound old, but seriously – where does the time go? If you disagree, just look at your New Year’s resolutions. They seem pretty far gone, don’t they?

Voting is already drawing to a close for The Finest 2018 (ballots must either be received or postmarked by July 6). I want to thank those who took the time to submit a ballot. I also want to acknowledge those who wrote in “CV Weekly” as a Finest category. I appreciate your remarks.

When I started The Finest seven years, in the spirit of fairness I purposely didn’t include the categories of newspaper, publishing or reporting. We are proud that the CV Weekly staff supports our community and can be seen volunteering at many events but, as a reminder, neither those on our staff nor newspapers are eligible to be nominated in any category. Of course, I’m sure you already know my opinion of what is the Finest newspaper.

In addition to the close of voting for The Finest, July also offers one of the biggest celebrations in the nation: Independence Day. I remember in 1975 I was in Boston for the Fourth of July holiday and had the chance to hear the Boston Pops at The Hatch Shell next to the Charles River in Boston, probably under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. What a wonderful night that was!

While we may not be next to a river nor have a full orchestra performing, our local Crescenta Valley 4th of July Fireworks Celebration is nothing at which to turn up one’s nose. The fireworks display is organized entirely by volunteers and is truly a sensational event. Live music, inflatables for the kids and food trucks all lead up to a fireworks display that is enviable. For the last couple of weeks, the CV Weekly has included in the paper an envelope in which donations could be made to the CV Fireworks Assn. Did you know that it costs about $1,000 a minute for a professional fireworks show? So whether you plan to attend the show at CV High School on Wednesday or are hosting a party that includes fireworks viewing, consider making that all-important donation to the association to ensure that next year we’ll also enjoy a show that is close to home and fantastic.
