On Thursday, the Crescenta Valley Community Association held its monthly meeting and discussed various topics that affect Crescenta Valley and Glendale stakeholders.

Two of the items on the agenda were plans for Rockhaven Sanitarium and a boutique hotel that would be located on Brand Boulevard in Glendale.

The Rockhaven Sanitarium was originally established by a psychiatric nurse in 1923 to help women with mild mental and nervous disorders. However, ownership of the Rockhaven property has switched hands multiple times since 2001. It currently is owned by the city of Glendale, which has stated over the years that it does not have the funds to restore the sanitarium. To explore development options the city has issued an RFP – request for proposals. Companies have until July 28 to submit their official proposals for how to restore and repair Rockhaven Sanitarium.

During the CVCA meeting, attendees voiced their opinions about what they would like to see happen with Rockhaven. Among these were keeping the buildings where they are, having parking spots for the visitors, opening the property to the public, and preserving its unique charm.

Another sentiment that was voiced repeatedly was, “Rockhaven was created by women for women.”

The sanitarium was a major accomplishment for women and many people at this meeting want that achievement to be highlighted when Rockhaven is restored.

Another main topic of discussion was the progress of the six-story boutique hotel that will be built on Brand Boulevard.

According to meeting attendees, the neighbors oppose the hotel, but the plans for the building are moving forward.

People are encouraged to meet with community associations to voice their opinions and get involved with changes in their cities that will affect them.

The next Crescenta Valley Community Association meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on July 28 at the La Crescenta Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd.
