Jailed Suspect Dies of Apparent Suicide

A suspect who was arrested for the stabbing death of a Glendale man has apparently committed suicide while in custody.

Ernest Culbertson, 31, of Tujunga was arrested on July 1 by the Glendale police on suspicion of fatally stabbing a 51-year-old Glendale man on June 30. He was charged with one count of murder and was in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles. While he was awaiting trial he was found dead of an apparent suicide.

He apparently hung himself in his “one man cell,” said Lt. Rodney Moore, LA Sheriff’s Dept., Homicide Bureau.

“He was not deemed a suicidal [risk],” Moore said. Homicide is now investigating the death as a suicide.

The GPD is continuing its investigation into the stabbing death.

“We will still investigate the crime to make sure there are no other suspects,” said Sgt. Robert William, GPD.

But at this point of the investigation GPD is confident there are no other suspects involved in the murder, William added.

“The suspect did cooperate [when arrested]. He did admit he assaulted the victim and used the knife in their dispute,” William said.

The investigators have not yet discovered what the dispute was over; however, police do know the suspect went to the Glendale man’s home to meet him and they did know each other prior to the man’s murder.
