Foothill Well Adds to Local Water Supplies
A long forgotten closed water well that was absorbed years ago by Glendale Water & Power has been rediscovered by the utility company. The well, which was drilled near Foothill Boulevard, had become overgrown with trees and shrubs. Glendale Water & Power reopened and tested the well to determine its production capacity.
Upon review of the results, GWP decided to put the well back into service because it was collecting significant amounts of local groundwater that would help reduce the amount of more costly imported water purchased from the Metropolitan Water District.
The well has been outfitted with a new 3,420 foot pipeline that will deliver water to the New York Avenue reservoir and is expected to produce 200 gallons per minute, running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Every gallon collected means one gallon less purchased from MWD which can, annually, will save 350 acre feet or about $245,000.
The well was officially commemorated on Tuesday, July 19 by Glendale Mayor Laura Friedman.
