GEF Launches Teacher Grant Program

Beginning this academic year, the Glendale Educational Foundation (GEF) launches a new initiative, the Teacher Grant Program. This program will make available a total of $15,000 for direct grants to classroom teachers in the Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) in the three priority areas – visual and performing arts, science and technology, and health and fitness.

The GEF Teacher Grants will provide financial support for the classroom that directly benefits students. The program is intended to enrich and enhance learning environments at GUSD schools by supporting innovative curriculum and instructional practices.

The 2017-18 GEF Teacher Grants application deadline is Oct. 30. Applications will be available at www.glened.org.

 

CVCOC Accepting Nominations for Recognition Banquet

The Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce is seeking applications for a variety of categories for individuals, businesses and organizations to be recognized at the 2017 Recognition Banquet being held Oct. 26. Deadline for submissions is Sept. 1.

Movie Fun at Two Strike Park

Projectionist Joe Renaudo will be bringing his vintage equipment to Two Strike Park on Saturday evening, Aug. 5, for silent movies in the park. The movies will begin around 8 p.m. and are free to attend.

Rosemont Preserve Open Gate Afternoon

An “open gate” event is taking place at the Rosemont Preserve on Sunday morning, Aug. 6. This is a chance for residents to visit the Preserve and wander the trail at their own pace and enjoy the tranquil setting, the wildlife and the natural beauty. Photographers: bring your camera to capture the early morning light.

The gate will be open from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and Friends of the Rosemont Preserve Committee members will be available to answer questions and present this community resource.

The Preserve is located at the north end of Rosemont Avenue, just past the chain link fence. As street parking is limited, please park at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave. Those planning on walking the trails should wear sturdy shoes.

This event is free to the public and suitable for all ages; no reservations required. Rain cancels. Sorry, no pets please.

USC-VHH Offers Heartsaver Class

The University of Southern California Verdugo Hills Hospital (USC-VHH) holds monthly adult, child and infant CPR and Automated External Defibrillator classes. These classes are designed for the layperson.

RFP Issued for Streetcar Feasibility Study

On July 31, the City of Glendale’s Community Development Dept. issued an RFP seeking qualified firms to develop a Streetcar Feasibility Study. The submittal deadline is Aug. 22 before 5 p.m.

It is the City’s goal to develop a streetcar system that can enhance connectivity by linking the various shopping, dining, entertainment and parking resources of Downtown Glendale with the region via the Glendale Transportation Center and the Hollywood Burbank Airport.

SCE Power Outage Planned

SCE will soon be performing maintenance on the electrical system in the area. In order to perform this work safely, power must be temporarily turned off. This outage will allow SCE to modernize its grid by making needed upgrades and repairs to increase reliability.

The outage is scheduled from 10 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 7 to 6 a.m. on Aug. 8 and will be affecting four residential customers, one commercial customer and one traffic control meter. The affected area is Verdugo Road, south side, east of Wishing Hill Drive.

It should be noted that the power may be off for the whole period or may be turned off more than once. This planned outage may not begin exactly at the stated start time, and some conditions may cause this planned outage to be postponed. The times noted are the best estimate of SCE and circumstances may affect both the start time and the completion time indicated.
