SCE & GWP Issue Info Re: Rolling Outages

The City of Glendale and Southern California Edison (SCE) are preparing for extremely high temperatures for many days in a row with little cooling in the evening. Glendale Water & Power (GWP) is asking customers to continue to conserve as much electricity as possible through this week to reduce the demand on the electrical system and to avoid rotating outages. At this time, rotating outages have not been declared. However, these high temperatures are expected to last through much of next week.

Rotating outages are controlled power outages that are enacted as a last resort when there is a statewide power emergency. Depending on the severity, GWP will shut off power for limited amounts of time to help ease the demand on the electrical grid. Rotating outages help prevent larger and longer power outages.

Customers are urged to conserve energy by turning off unnecessary lights, turning up the thermostat whenever possible, using fans and not running large appliances and pool equipment until after 9 p.m. For up-to-date information   Twitter @COGWaterPower.

Today, Monday, Aug. 17 the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) has declared a warning due to low power reserves and high demand for electricity on the California electric grid. At this time, CAISO rotating outages have not been declared but could be later. Rotating outages may begin if the CAISO declares a stage 3 emergency, most likely during peak hours from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Rotating outages typically last one hour. Due to quickly changing conditions, customers may not receive additional notifications until the emergency has concluded.

The warning is expected to be in effect until 11:59 p.m. today, Monday. A warning is an operational notification from the California grid operators that activates demand response programs to decrease overall demand for electricity.
CAISO encourages SCE customers to reduce energy to help avoid CAISO rotating outages.
