Weather in the Foothills

“The summer night was settling upon the neighborhood like a dark lace veil,
casting dappled shadows on the roofs and sidewalks and lawns.”
~ Victoria Kahler, Luisa Across the Bay

Weather related stories, primarily coming from California, continue to make both local and international headlines this summer. Record-breaking heat waves, wildfires of historical proportion and ocean temperatures measuring near 80 degrees are being reported by Eyewitness News and BBC alike. I think we need to escape, even for just one “summer night.”

Located slightly southwest of La Crescenta’s approximate mid-point –Parkhaven Court and Orange Avenue – lies a place like no other. Imagine a coming together of Shangri-La, Mayberry, Camelot and perhaps Hogwarts. This is our street. If only our boys had lived here while growing up. Be it as it may, perhaps now we will appreciate it more.

Saturday night was our 9th Annual Block Party. Each year is unique as new families replace old ones and toddlers grow into teens. Our newest neighbors bring four children to play, the youngest (and the reason for their move) are 5½ -month-old twin girls. Dad – Chris – is there by himself until the house is rid of mold. Finding a party flyer in his mailbox, he decided to check us out. Before the sun had set, he sat back drinking one of Matt’s now-expected margaritas made from an old family recipe. Mold problems were forgotten and new friendships begun.

A Rockwellian scene unfolded as children splashed in front yard wading pools and teen boys shot baskets while coaching the little guys. Our middle and high school young ladies were lamenting over the fast approaching start of school. The food … It was as diverse as the cooks, with hot dogs, Philippine noodles and Kraft macaroni and cheese. Every year, Mr. Lee makes a monetary contribution, bowing as he politely leaves. Thank you, Mr. Lee.

Party-pups Abby, Micky, Rocky, Blaze and Lola acted as the clean-up crew.

The first days of school forecast brings cooler weather as marine air drifts into the foothills.
