Glendale College Celebrates 90 Years

Glendale Community College is celebrating its 90th anniversary with the “Reaching for the Stars” fundraiser event on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The evening will include a reception and silent auction, dinner, live auction, awards and entertainment. Actor and GCC alumna Angie Dickenson will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Other honorees include the Bistagne Family as Philanthropists of Distinction and Gene “Chip” Stone as Outstanding Alumnus. Los Angeles Times columnist and editor Chris Erskine is master of ceremonies. The event starts at 6 p.m. and will be held on the San Gabriel Plaza.

“Reaching for the Stars” is a fundraiser for GCC’s Student Success Fund established in 2012 to assist students in reaching their educational goals. Funds raised at the anniversary event will go towards scholarships, emergency funds for students in need, musical instruments, science equipment, uniforms for students in the nursing program and athletic uniforms, books, transportation tokens and other assistance for students. The Student Success Fund has also helped foster youth, military veterans, students with disabilities and first generation college students.

The college was founded in 1927 as Glendale Junior College and classes were held at Glendale Union High School at Broadway and Verdugo. In 1929, the college moved to the Harvard School plant of the Glendale Union High School District, now the site of the Glendale Public Library, where it remained until 1937. An earthquake in 1933 forced the college to hold classes in tent bungalows for the next four years. In 1937, the current Verdugo campus opened.

Individual tickets for the 90th anniversary celebration are $250 and must be reserved by Sept. 15. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
