Though the Station fire dominated the news for most of the end of August and beginning of September, the Crescenta Valley Town Council was also making news with the installation of three new military heroes banners along Foothill Boulevard.
A banner has been installed for Nick Steinbacher in front of Pickens Canyon Park where his tree and plaque are located. The banner is emblazoned with a gold star to honor the sacrifice made for his country.
A banner for Spencer Valentine of the U.S. Air Force has also been erected. Valentine attended Lincoln Elementary and Rosemont Middle schools and graduated from CVHS in 2008. He was active in the Junior Air Force ROTC program at the high school. Valentine is an honor graduate from basic military training camp at Lackland AFB, Texas. He is now attending air traffic control school at Keesler AFB near Biloxi, Miss.
U.S. Army soldier Luis Figueroa has been in the service for 16 years. He has been deployed twice and is currently in Afghanistan. He is married and has a son and daughter. They live locally and attend Holy Redeemer Church in Montrose.
