Mother Arrested For DUI & Child Endangerment

On Sept. 17 the Glendale Police Dept. arrested 46-year-old Glendale resident Sharla Joseph after she reportedly ran over her 7-year-old son’s leg. She was booked for felony DUI involving an injury and child endangerment.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. when Joseph was shopping at the Ralph’s supermarket located in the 1200 block of North Central Avenue in the City of Glendale. Joseph was with her 5- and 7-year-old sons and was reportedly arguing with her children due to behavioral issues as they were leaving the store. Once they got to their vehicle, Joseph told her kids that she was leaving them behind. She entered the vehicle and locked the kids out. As she began backing out of her parking stall, the two boys began clinging onto the passenger side door handles. As Joseph drove forward again, the 7-year-old son fell to the ground and the rear tire of the vehicle drove over his leg. The child was transported to Children’s Hospital for treatment and did not sustain any significant injuries other than pain and bruising to his thigh area. The 5-year-old son was uninjured.

During the course of the investigation, officers on scene detected obvious signs of alcohol intoxication from Joseph. They conducted field sobriety tests in which they believed she performed poorly. Joseph refused to administer chemical tests, but due to the nature and severity of the crime, the Glendale Police Dept. obtained a search warrant for blood samples, which was later administered at a local hospital.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office filed one count of felony DUI involving injury and two counts of child endangerment. Joseph was in custody with a $200,000 bail. The children were released to the custody of family members and the case was referred to the Los Angeles County Dept. of Child Services.
